Unveiling the First Slovenian 🇸🇮 C-27J Spartan "Martin Krpan"

Post by ruge75 »

Cerklje ob Krki Air base Wed December 20, 2023

The Slovenian Air Force has officially received its first Leonardo C-27J Spartan tactical transport aircraft. The aircraft arrived at the Cerklje ob Krki air base and was welcomed in a ceremony attended by defense officials and military personnel. The Defense Minister of Slovenia, Marjan Ĺ arec, emphasized the significance of the new acquisition, highlighting its dual role for both military operations and aiding citizens during natural disasters, as experienced in the past summer. The C-27J is expected to enhance the transport capabilities of the Slovenian Armed Forces significantly.

The C-27J Spartan is designed to be versatile, able to transport up to 60 personnel and carry a maximum payload of 11,300 kilograms. It's equipped to handle a variety of missions, including troop transport, equipment and paratrooper airdrops, medical transport, and civilian evacuations. It also features a Modular Airborne Fire-Fighting System or MAFFS II, which includes a tanker configuration capable of holding eight tons of water, specifically ordered for Slovenia to fulfill aerial firefighting requirements.

The aircraft represents a step forward in Slovenia's military modernization and development, with a second aircraft expected to join the fleet to maintain continuous airworthiness and operational endurance. The acquisition is part of a Government-to-Government (G2G) agreement signed with Italy on November 17, 2021, with an amendment signed on September 19, 2023, which allowed for the order of the second aircraft.

The Spartan's arrival marks a milestone in Slovenian military technology, potentially opening avenues for the development of the nation's military aviation sector. The aircraft ensures operational independence for the Slovenian Army, providing capabilities that were notably missed during the COVID-19 epidemic in 2020 when Slovenia faced challenges due to inadequate aviation facilities.
