F-4C in Pordenone, Italy (??)

Post by ehusmann »

According to just about all websites I can find, F-4C 63-7512 is preserved in Pordenone, Italy. (For those who do not know, this is close to Aviano). However..... it doesn't seem like anyone has ever seen the thing and it is not visible on Google Earth either. So it looks like another one-copies-the-other error which nobody has ever bothered to check. Or can anyone point me to the actual location of it?

hoi Erwin,

Have been searching for this one myself as well some time ago.

received following input (Thanks Tonno !):
No F-4 preserved in the Aviano area any more.
It was s/n 63-7512 ex 163rd TFS/Indiana ANG, landed in Aviano 10.07.86.
it was painted in "63040/AV", and used for GI
noted last time may 1992...
then scrapped

That indeed makes more sense. I had seen info it was at some point in use for BDRT (also mentioned at Spangdahlem before moving to Aviano). Being scrapped after that sounds more reliable than being preserved somewhere, unless of course somebody took parts of it for home preservation.

Thanks Coert.

Hiya!

According to EW&R 2 it was owned by the same collector that owns J-4068 (page 259). It is mentioned here that both aircraft 'are reported to become part of the new La Comina Museum near Udine'. However, even back then it had not been noted for several years (last noted 1-91, the book is from 1998). The 'Museo Storico Aeronautico' where J-4068 is now does not seem to show any obvious signs of Phantom debris, so my guess would be it has become part of countless Coke cans (or more realistically Fiat's) by now.
