Plane spotting facilities at Dublin Airport - Ireland

As I am a new subscriber to Scramble - I hope that I am doing this correctly - but I wonder if I may I ask if anyone in the Scramble Community has paid a visit to Dublin Airport? I am trying to find out what the viewing facilities are like from inside the airport terminal please. I hope to be there for a short visit - but as I will not have a car will be restricted to the terminal building for viewing aircraft.
Many thanks,
Martha

Hi Martha,

Welcome and yes you may, of course! I don't have the answers, but I'm sure somebody does.

Flying in it depends on which gates you land at. Area A & C (I Think) are OK you can wander around airside with good views, you won't miss anything moving, not bad for photo's if the glass has been cleaned. The New pier and Area B are not so good, you get fed out through customs. If that happens the views landside are limited to a window outside the toilets on the top floor between a cafe and McDonalds, the bar next to them has views to, no good for photo's. If you feel adventurous, leave the terminal to the right, follow the road to the second set of traffic lights and turn right. Follow this road under the approach and turn right at next lights. keep going until you find a good spot with views back over the apron and runway. This walk takes about 40 mins.

Hi Martha,

Spotting airside is probably the best thing to do. Landside in the terminal is the MacDonalds the best spot. But a limited view on the runway.

Cheers,
Erik

I will arrive on an Aer Lingus flight from Amsterdam. Is it then possible to stay behind the customs?

Thanks,
Eric

I was giving this more thought last night. The more I think about it the more I think that you will be guided straight out through customs. However, if you're on a day trip and have checked in on line for the return leg you can go straight back through customs and have good views. I hope the windows have been cleaned though!

Report of trip to Dublin on Wednesday 16th April from 09:00 to 20:30.

Parked at new pier, area D not much of a view on landing but you can read off most of the parked Biz/GA. Left the terminal and walked around the end of the runway (28) to the road that runs parallel to it. Landing on 10 so had to walk quite far (About 50 mins from terminal) found a mound to stand on to see over the fence (It could do with being a bit higher, the top of the fence just gets into the bottom of pictures). About another 500m is the Irish Helicopters hanger, you can see most things parked outside. Walked back and checked in. The view from Area C is good, but the windows are filthy, no good for pictures. Went to Area D, excellent views from departure level, everything can be logged but pictures limited due to the position of the sun and again dirty windows. For the price Ryanair charge I think it’s well worth a visit.

The usual suspects.

I have always been directed straight out, but you can go straight back in with a boarding pass if visiting for the day. After security you are in Area C. Access to other areas available but signs say no return access, don't know how true this is. Suppose you can act daft and say you got lost.
