The Netherlands will supply Chinooks to the NATO mission in Iraq

The Netherlands will supply Chinook transport helicopters to the NATO mission in Iraq.
Sources confirm this to the political editorial staff of RTL Nieuws.

Tomorrow the cabinet will discuss that proposal in the Council of Ministers.
The House of Representatives must then formally agree to it.

The government announced in July 2023 that it wanted to contribute more to the NATO mission in Iraq.
This involved an infantry company of a total of 145 Dutch soldiers.

Movements

From January 1, these soldiers will be deployed for Force Protection in Baghdad for a year.

Their task is mainly to move Dutch people and allies who have to be somewhere in Iraq for work.

It is not known how many Chinooks are going to Iraq and when.

The Netherlands currently owns 20 Chinook transport helicopters.
They are used for transporting personnel and equipment,
but also for casualty transport and firefighting.

The helicopter is recognizable by the double rotors and the loading ramp at the rear.

The NATO mission is intended to prevent further instability in the region.
This should combat a revival of the conflict,
as well as the terrorist threat from terrorist groups such as ISIS.

The Netherlands is currently already providing advisors and staff officers to strengthen the Iraqi security sector. That commitment will be extended until July 2025.

The House of Representatives must still formally approve the contribution to the NATO mission in Iraq.

Additional Dutch soldiers to Iraq, three Chinooks and a NATO commander

The Netherlands is sending another 135 soldiers as a contribution to the NATO mission in Iraq (NMI).

The outgoing government supplies three Chinooks, transport helicopters, with a crew of 120 soldiers.

A Dutchman will also become commander of the NATO mission.

It is not yet known who that will be. He or she will be assigned a staff of 15 soldiers.
The soldiers will go to the country for a year, from May 2024 to May 2025.

The additional delivery is in addition to a military contribution that was announced at the beginning of July .
It then concerned an infantry company of 145 soldiers.
They have been deployed since January 1 to protect the mission.
The total therefore amounts to approximately 281 Dutch soldiers.
