When the various goverments are busy with apologies, as a reserve Belg (limburger) I found the "pickelhaube" helmet on the tail of the Phantom very offending. The same model helmet was used in the war of aggression against Belgium in 1914

Not at all. If you consider all the actions taken governmentwide a few decades ago when a Dutch submarine entered a Greek harbour, carrying a flag used during that country's period of fascism, of which official apologies were only a small part, and (contrary to this Wehrmacht statement) correction was pulled through in a few hours time, I don't feel it is exagerated, Also because it happened during a display from a country that took the hassle to come and display one of its aircraft, while there are still some people high up in its chain of command that have a sensible attitude towards display flying.

I liked the show(was there on saturday), but one thing I really don't understand... We were standing about 15 ft behind the fence(static line) watching and photographing the airplanes. And then there are those spotters/photographers who think they are there alone and stand in front of you with their ladders, blocking our view completely !!!! To those, please keep in mind that there are people behind you who also like to watch the show!!!! At one time there was a complete wall of people on their step-ladders. Not to take a pic of a static aircraft, I don't have problems with that, but standing there all the time...

Idea for next year: bring a ladder yourself...

I'm sorry, but I was also one of the many spotters standing on a ladder...and I do not regret that. Because without a ladder it is just impossible to make good photos on the runway. A ladder just belongs to the standard inventory for an airshow.

Come on. Shall we stop the exaggerating and continue discussing the airshow again? Why always the crying about these kinds of events afterwards? It is always the same =censored= with people telling what was wrong and could have been better. If you only can be negative about it, then please don't come next year! Then there is more room for people who trully enjoy these days!

I agree with Snipes on this one.

I don't have any problems with ladders, as long as they position themselves several meters from the fence.
What I don't understand is people using a ladder AT THE FENCE.
Come on, the fence isn't really that high, you can easily see over it when you're on the ground.
Also, do you really think that one meter higher really makes that much of a difference for taking runway pics? The difference on or off a ladder is a staggering 0.3 degrees.

I think I don't agree with Joe on this one. The elevation does make the difference alltough I can imagine that stepladders aren't everyones favourite. I think the problem lies deeper in the lay out of the event. At Gilze and Leeuwarden all of the public is disperced at a relativy huge terrain. Spotters and "dagjes-mensen" (holidayshopers) don't get in eachothers hair. The space at Volkel is centainly half of that of Gilze and Leeuwarden. Fot the spotter than the funn aint't over for as the view to the rainway is blocked with the static line and the cars driven (not knowing at which goals they are driving) for left to right and from right to left blocking the view at the runway for all those concerned. The number of pictures with the roof of a passing car with the aircraft was quite huge this time!

Some to end with the words that will be remembered Volkel aint the most perfect base for giving layout but if we try to take into account everyones whises for them being there some positive should come out.
With Gilze in 2014 and Leeuwarden in 2016 we all got untill 2017 to sort things out

You're a meter (at least) higher than the people around you, so leave some space in front so more people can enjoy the show.

As I said, ladders are ok, for making a picture and then move on. Don't stay at the same place at the front, blocking the view for the people behind you. The airshow is not for the spotters alone, but for everyone who is there, even if they are dagjesmensen or holidayshoppers...

In regards to ladders my opinion is, do an elevated stand (which I think is better) instead of ladders for those who like to be higher but will be made only against a small payment (like RIAT) so it will be an extra option for those with ladders. Then it has to be decided (written on the entrance) that no one will be allowed to bring ladders during the airshow as it isn't fair over fellow photographers.
I experienced this myself also, I couldn't take pictures when I wanted as at the whole crowd line was packed with people on stools and ladders. There was also some that closed the area with high vis tape round their chairs!! which in my opinion is not acceptable!

@navyGM Three Alouettes nearby the C-130/C-17 were very good for photos.
I guess they made (all three in total) 20 flights so good shots was no problem.
Even the NH90 and Cougar dropped some people in front of the Alouettes.

the aluettes were parked facing the RNAF c-130 just behind it. this was on friday and I am pretty sure as I went to see myself.

They made lots of flights you're right, but always against the sun! behind the crowd were flying which in my opinion are not good for photos...

Is there any possibility now that you can photograph them all? Ive been told there are only 4 still flying. For me those are very interesting obviously because Im not dutch

I think he did on purpose as the commentary just announced them as patrouille de france (!) (and almost no one noticed that as well... )
