Where can I find the Austrian Saab 105's serials?

Post by Sven van Roij »

Hi all,

I'm (still) sorting out my pics of the RNLAF open days at Volkel this year. I've some pics of the two Austrian Saab 105O's as well (one with a big blu G and the other with a big blue F on the tail) but can't find their official regi on the pics. On the web I found some info about them. It shout be, acording to airliners.net, the BG-37 and BF-36.

First of all: is this correct? And the 2nd question: does anybody now if this is painted somewere on the a/c's as well? Can't find it somehow!

Thanks in advance!

Regards,
Sven

The registrations as listed by Airliners.net can be found on http://www.ondutchwings.nl/db/austria.php" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; , just type '105' (in the Type field) and you will get a complete list.

As far as I know, the serials are not carried externally. The 'BF' and 'BG' mean 'Blue F' and 'Blue G' and these are linked to the numerical serials.

I don't need a serialbook, I've got the MASR09 myself. I just need to now if I can find the serial on the plane itself.

Oke, thanks for the info. But that leaves the following question: how do the spotters that placed their photo's on airliners.net know the right serial? You have to see the AC from the inside to know it I understand you right?

No, you don't have to see the aircraft from the inside (would be nice, though  ). The full serial of Austrian Saab 105's is in the range 1101-1140; these serials are derived from the construction numbers, ranging from 105401 to 105440. Each aircraft was given a colour code and an individual letter when first delivered to the Austrian air force. The first ten aircraft were Yellow A (1101) to Yellow J (1110); then came Green A (1111) to Green J (1120), then Red A (1121) to Red J (1130) and the final ten were Blue A (1131) to Blue J (1140). That system has not changed since the aircraft were delivered. The aircraft do not change codes or colours. Blue F has always been 1136 (or, in other words, 1136 has always been Blue F) and will remain so until it crashes, is scrapped or otherwise demolished. The colour and individual letter are NEVER transferred to another aircraft.

Thus, for convenience's sake -and because no serial is carried externally- the accepted way of denoting the aircraft registration is BF36 or 36BF for 1136/Blue F. Ship 1101 would be YA01 or 01YA for 1101/Yellow A.

If I remember correctly there's a construction plate giving the c/n in the cockpit and the serial should also be painted on the bulkhead aft of the seats, (and I've once heard rumours about the serial being on the inside of the door of the stowage compartment where they put the covers and remove before flight tags) but I have never checked that personally.

Hope this helps.

And another problem: does anybody know why the BF-36 isn't printed in the MASR09?

It was last noted stored in August 2001 and thought to be withdrawn from use, but in April this year it was seen flying again so just too late for publication.

What amazes me though is that in the last few MASR editions, Blue F is nowhere mentioned ??
Looking at the sequence one would expect this indeed to be BF-36 but still, it's not in the books so what's the story behind that ??

Hi,

Although the serials are not carried externally, they can be found on the aircraft. On the fuselage, near the tail, there is a small see-through peace of plastic (or similar material), that reveals the serials. I have checked a few in the past.

BTW: SMS 2009 (http://www.scramble.nl/shop.htm) lists all the aircraft, as does http://www.scramble.nl/atbase.htm
