Very fast

Post by Wildpicture »

Today the US (DARPA) is testing a craft (Falcon Hypersonic Technology Vehicle 2) from Vandenberg AFB in California. They are trying to make it reach a speed of mach 20.

More info on the craft can be found here:

And a article in the dutch newspaper

http://www.telegraaf.nl/buitenland/1034 ... buitenland

Amerikanen testen supervliegtuig

According to an article on telegraaf.nl, the Falcon HTV-2 lost contact today (thursday) on a test flight. Probably crashed into the ocean.

Just like a previous example..........
PH-BZF/G, PH-LMR, PH-BXR, PH-KCD, G-EUPR, G-EUUR.

See for yourself at:
http://www.flightglobal.com/articles/20 ... htv-2.html

The Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) prematurely lost contact with the hypersonic test vehicle (HTV-2) on its second and final flight.

After a 24h delay due to inclement weather, the Orbital Sciences Minotaur IV rocket lifted off from Vandenberg AFB, California, lifting HTV-2 above the atmosphere.

DARPA confirmed successful separation from the launcher, telemetry data reception and entry into the high-speed glide phase. DARPA posted a notification on their official Twitter feed that ground stations lost telemetry feed from HTV-2.

During the first flight of HTV-2, on 23 April, 2010, telemetry was lost 9min into the flight. A subsequent investigation found that the vehicle encountered unexpected yaw, followed by an uncontrollable roll. The onboard computer proceeded to steer the vehicle into the ocean.

The premature loss of HTV-2 marks the second major hypersonic loss of 2011; the June flight of the Boeing X-51 waverider failed when its scramjet encountered an inlet unstart upon startup.

For the record:
Falcon HTV-2 is an attempt for a controlable re-entry vehicle. Instead of a parabolic flight path, they want to steer an re-entry vehicle (read: the point of the preent balistic missile) as a glider with thrusters (for steering).

The Boeing X-51 waverider completed its first powered flight successfully on 26 May 2010 by flying for over 200 seconds and reaching a speed of Mach 5; it did not meet the planned 300 second flight duration, however. (source:wikipedia)

NASA flew a third version of the X-43A on November 16, 2004, achieving/maintaining a speed of Mach 9.68[3] at about 34,000 metres (112,000 ft) altitude (source:wikipedia)
