2 Killed in California Crash of Experimental Plane
Monday, February 08, 2010

REDLANDS, Calif. — The Federal Aviation Administration says a small plane has crashed in San Bernardino County, killing both people onboard.

FAA spokesman Ian Gregor says the single-engine Yakovlev YAK-52 left Redlands Municipal Airport and the pilot planned to return there when the plane went down shortly before 1 p.m. Monday in a wash 10 miles north of town.

The crash killed a man and a woman. The plane was registered to a Riverside man.

The Yak-52 originally was designed in the former Soviet Union as an acrobatic training aircraft. The FAA classifies it as an experimental aircraft.

Redlands is 70 miles east of Los Angeles.
