Plane crashes in eastern Venezuela

A plane has crashed in eastern Venezuela with 47 people on board, the country's transport minister has said.

The aircraft, belonging to the state airline Conviasa, came down shortly after taking off from Manuel Carlos Piar Airport, near Ciudad Guayana.

The director of the Civil Protection agency in the Guayana region said there were survivors but that it was not yet known how many.

The plane was flying from Ciudad Guayana to Porlamar on Isla Margarita.

The ATR 42 twin-turboprop, belonging to the state airline Conviasa, came down after leaving Manuel Carlos Piar airport, outside Ciudad Guayana.

Bolivar State Governor Francisco Rangel Gomez told the pan-American TV channel, Telesur, that at least 23 survivors had been taken to local hospitals.

The plane was flying from Ciudad Guayana to Porlamar on Isla Margarita.

Transport Minister Francisco Garces told state television that the aircraft had crashed at about 1000 local time (1430 GMT), some 10km (six miles) from Puerto Ordaz, a suburb of Ciudad Guayana where the airport is located.

The plane, which had 43 passengers and four crew on board, went down on uninhabited land owned by the state-run Sidor steel foundry.

Mr Garces said the pilots had reported technical problems.
