According to Libya's Air Afriqiyah Airways it was an A330-200 - with serialnumber 1024 - and just 8 months old

How can a large plane break-up in such tiny parts? Usually the fuselage is still there more or less, but here only the tail is intact. In the film you can see a plane approaching Tripoli airport, which gives you an idea how far from the runway this must have happened. About 3 miles I guess?

(Does someone of the Ian Allan-tour of last year know in which A330 we flew back to London?)

the Ian Allan-tour (including me) flew on tha 5A-ONG, which was most likely this airframe

According nu.nl there was at the moment of the crash no ash from the icelandic volcano in the air. Only low visibility...

About 900m short of the runway. The other aircraft shown is departing Tripoli.

Wow visibilty decreased quite rapidly during the time of the crash according to these METARS. From 6000m to 2000m in about half an hour.
To answer your question: that normally happens when an aircraft hits the ground real hard :?
No Slijfie has a good point, looking at the impact point. It was just short of the runway, suggesting it was low and slow. On final approach at low altitude it would not make sense that the plane came apart in so many small pieces spread over such a large area.

It appears that the A330 was overshooting runway 27 rather than approaching 09. Missed approach?

You could be right. Seen from the 27 sight of the runway, the crashsite seems to be left of the centerline. See post Huub above.

Might be. But it is still speculation. However this could explain why the tail is directed 180 opposite of the flightpath towards 09. Regarding the image http://tinyurl.com/pic-5A-ONG: When you look carefully, the exact location can't be as Huub described in http://tinyurl.com/loc-5A-ONG. Check out the 2 little towers on the building behind the tail, and notice that these, and the tail form a straight line, which indicates a location at the 10 o'clock position of the mentioned one. This is the piece of barren land north of the building. (still off centerline)

it was strange to hear about the crash and find out we flew on that aircraft :?

Very sad what happended, but it did bring back good memories as well from the airshow

If you ask me, (well, you might not...) we don't know much enough about the AF incident, AFAIK no report has been published, CVR and FDR are still not found etc. to talk about any simularity between the incidents. Except for a lawyer thinking about lots of money to be earned (partly for himself) in court. The man was not only getting himself publicity in the Teleblaat, he was also pushing/spamming himself on TV yesterday night.
