Japan Airlines has taken delivery of the first Airbus A350-1000. In total, the airline expects thirteen of these aircraft. The Japanese have been flying the smaller A350-900 for some time, but are going to use its big brother in a completely different way.
Japan Airlines' sixteen A350-900s are only used by the airline on busy domestic routes, especially between major cities and to Okinawa. These are flights of no more than 2.5 hours. They are therefore equipped with a large number of seats: 369 to 391.
The seven-metre-longer A350-1000 will be used on long-haul routes and has far fewer seats on board: only 239, due to a premium heavy configuration. Incidentally, that is also quite little for long-haul. KLM, for example, is adding 152 more seats to the A350-1000.
JAL, as Japan Airlines is abbreviated, is also introducing the latest on-board product at the same time as the new Airbus, including more privacy. Six passengers can be seated in First Class, 54 in Business Class (pictured below), 24 in Premium Economy and 155 in Economy.
The A350-1000 will be the first to be used on the route from Tokyo Haneda to New York JFK. This type will eventually replace the Boeing 777-300ER.
