Around the world in 21 days (Caution, long topic!)

Post by adz »

If the moderaters want this topic divided into seperate ones, or the pictures moved, or anything else, please let me know. I just decided to create a full impression here, with just a few pictures.

Around the world in 21 days

As two of my friends decided to do some research for their studies abroad in two very different places, I took the opportunity to visit both of them. One of them in Sydney, Australia. The other one in Heredia, Costa Rica. Heredia is a small city just north of the capitol San José. This, of course, was a good opportunity to visit a few nice airports around the world and fly some aircraft types I'd never flown before. But this required some careful planning, as I only had three weeks off from work. First I had to find the right ticket; and I decided to take a Star Alliance 'round the world'-ticket. This ticket is based on a fixed price per miles flown, excluding airport-, fuel- and other taxes. It's not cheap, but a good price compared to buying loose tickets.

My journey started on the 5th of January at a check-in desk of SAS at Schiphol. Initially my flight to Copenhagen was planned with a Dash 8-400, but in the time between booking and the actual flight, SAS had decided to withdraw the Dash from service after a few incidents with the landing gear of these aircraft. Hoping they would change the aircraft to an MD-80 series aircraft, I was a bit disappointed to hear it was going to be an A319. Upon arrival at the gate I found out, to my relief, that it was at least a new registration for me, OY-KBR. And with a rolling take-off from runway 24/S5, SK552 was on its way, and my trip had now really started.

After a comfortable flight of just under an hour, we landed on runway 22L, and my first new airport on the list could be ticked off.
While walking around the airport, disaster struck. Without dropping it, my binoculars somehow disintegrated on its own. Unable to fix it, I could see my plane-spotting time go down the drain, looking for a store that sold binoculars, but none of them did. With a bit of force, I managed to get one of the eyes working again, though limited and without zoom, but at least I could read the registrations again. After a couple of hours, it was time to go towards gate C28 for my next flight. Luckily, that one was with SAS as well, so my baggage was checked all the way to my next stop. It was cold outside, and due to some drizzle as well, we needed some remote de-icing. In total, it took us more than 50 minutes from our gate to the runway.

Airbus 343 OY-KBM brought me to Tokyo Narita in 10 hours and 5 minutes, but I could think of better ways to spend such a time. The In-Flight Entertainment system was broken, so every once in a while, my reading light spontaneously turned on, making sleep impossible. I was told that it could not be switched off, and another seat was not available. As I did not have a window seat, there was no looking outside, so it turned out to be a rather tiring and boring flight.

At exactly 2 minutes to 11 in the morning, we touched down on runway 34L, and my 24 hours in Japan had begun. After a quick round-up of the aircraft at the terminal of arrival, a long wait at immigration and a short stop at the Panorama terrace on top of T1, I took a shuttle bus to the Marroad Hotel, where I would spend the night. I had arranged a room with a view of the runway, but the idea was to visit Haneda Airport to score some domestic traffic, so after a quick session of freshing up and an amazed look at the toilet (it had all kinds of levers, buttons and a two-page instruction manual), I headed back to the Airport to catch a Limousine Bus to Haneda, which got me there in a bit more than an hour.

Besides just seeing a lot of new aircraft, I had planned to make some use of my camera. In the afternoon Haneda's Terminal 2, ANA's terminal, has the best panorama terrace for that kind of activity. Planning was to check out what was present at T1, JAL's terminal, and then head for the other side. But as time went by, I was unable to break loose of the string of aircraft on approach and eventually I went to T2 when it got too dark too read the registrations of aircraft on the runway. A short time was spent at the terrace a T2 before I took the Limousine Bus back to Narita, with quite a number of JA- and just 3 non JA-registered aircraft in the pocket.

The return ride took approximately an hour and a half, and I got off at T2 at Narita. The terrace on top of that terminal would be open for another 45 minutes, so I had to be quick to catch a few nice aircraft to conclude the day.

The following morning, the first registration was noted at 0600am from my hotel room. But the view is still limited to a very small part of the airport, so you'd better get back to the airport as soon as you can. After avoiding the sushi at breakfast, the hotel shuttle bus took me to Terminal 1 again, where I could drop my suitcase at check-in to move around a bit more freely. After check-in, a terminal transfer bus took me back to T2, where I made another short stop at the terraces, before heading back to T2 again to proceed to the gate. Next up was a 7 hour 16 minute flight to Singapore.

JA608A of ANA Air Japan, combined with the excellent service and food, made for a very comfortable and enjoyable midday flight. With just an approximate 20% of the seats filled, I had all the room I needed with a window seat and nobody sitting next to me. If you ever have the chance to fly with ANA, I can recommend it.

Not wanting to spend time going through customs in Singapore, again I stayed airside the whole time. Not very properly prepared for this airport, and having heard stories of strict security, I decided not to take chances, and just a quick glance over the military platform was enough to find out that none of the aircraft there were readable from my point of view. Why bother trying too hard, attracting attention and ending up with none of the aircraft read? I moved from T1 to T2, from where my next flight would be. Unfortunately, the outside area was closed, probably because the sun was almost down. Thus my time was spend inside, behind some greenish glass. Here I had my first encounter with the massive A380, not having been to Air shows the last few years. Not the most pretty aircraft, but still nice to catch a new airliner type. By the time it got really dark, most aircraft on the taxiway towards the main departure runway became unreadable, so from then on I walked quite a few kilometers inside the terminal, to catch the aircraft at their gate.

By the time I arrived at gate F41 for my next flight to Sydney (departure time 00:30), the waiting area there was already packed with people; It's one of the more popular routes in Asia, no wonder SIA uses the A380 on this route on a daily basis. Our flight was with a B744, all seats filled up and no window seat available for me, unfortunately. Singapore Airlines' 9V-SPP in Star Alliance colourscheme was the winning number. Against what you hear most of the time, SIA did not strike me as an airline with such exceptional service and comfort. I guess the impoliteness of some fellow passengers around me towards the flight attendants and the cramped seat (maybe that's what you can expect with a length of 1.89m) did not contribute much to the atmosphere.

With an airborne time of 7 hours and exactly 1 minute, our flight ended on runway 16R of Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport, my first destination where I would spend more than just a few hours. Local time was 10:48. I spent a few hours at the panorama terrace. From here you have a rather good view of the airport and you can make some nice shots of landing and taxiing aircraft as well.
But, as said in the beginning, I was visiting a friend in Sydney. Around 2 ‘o clock I called it quits and went to his room in Newtown, one of the suburbs of Sydney, in proximity of the university.

A nice feature of the house where he lived was that the backyard offered, although somewhat limited, a view on the approach of both runway 16L and 16R, so during my stay, I managed to spot quite a lot from the backyard as well. To make the picture of this trip complete, I will include these logs as well. The next week was spent in and around Sydney, walking along the coast, in National Parks, spending time on the beach, going out at night, celebrating my friend’s birthday etc…

Unfortunately it was time to leave on the 15th, so after check-in, I had a couple of hours to spend on the airport, before going through customs. Again these were spent on the panorama terrace. Looking back, I could have spend a bit more time there, as there were no queues on the way to the gate, and the view was a bit more limited from that area, but then again, you don’t want to risk arriving late at the gate.

And we were airborne, on our way on what would be a 13 hour 42 minute flight to Vancouver, as I had decided to transit through Canada towards Costa Rica. B773 C-FITU was the only 8,5 months old aircraft that took me there. The overall room I had was OK, although I couldn’t fully stretch my legs due to an electronics cover underneath the seat in front of me. Despite of the fact that this flight was more than 3,5 hours longer than the one from Copenhagen to Tokyo, it was a much more comfortable flight. The flight was quite full, with only a few empty seats. Service was good; it started with a small snack and a few hours in flight a nice warm meal was served with quite a large bowl of (relatively) fresh fruit. A nice breakfast was served before, date- and time wise, we arrived before we left. Nobody paid much attention to it during the flight, as we crossed the International Dateline in the middle of the night, but we left on the 15th of January at 1354 local time and local arrival time was 0836, also on the 15th of January.

Although I had checked in all the way through to Toronto in Sydney, everybody on the plane (that would continue on the same flight to Toronto, I had booked a flight a few hours later, to get a bit more time on Vancouver), even the people that would continue with exactly the same aircraft, had to go through customs checks, retrieve their baggage and check them in at a transfer desk again. Needless to say that this took more time than I would have liked, but after about half an hour, I could start writing serious numbers. I decided not to go to the harbour airport, as it would probably cost me quite a bit of time without any planes during the ride, so that’s something to look out for next time. You need to walk around the airport a bit to get most aircraft, airside is not the best place for spotting at Vancouver. Still, I had a few satisfactory hours at this airport.

Originally planned for my flight with Air Canada to Toronto was a 767-300, but due to an aircraft change, I ended up inside A321 C-GIUB, that has a special ’70th anniversary’ theme in the tail. This particular aircraft had just gotten the eXtreme Makeover for the cabin, so a nice entertainment system and seats with enough legroom for me. Apparently I was a somewhat privileged customer, because when the selling of drinks and sandwiches began, I was offered a complimentary beverage and sandwich. My name appeared on a list with just a few other economy passengers. Being Dutch, I gladly accepted, although I probably would have paid the 7 Canadian Dollars if I had to, as I had gotten a bit hungry.
After a flight of 4 hours 11 minutes, we arrived at a dark Toronto. I had made a reservation at the Sheraton hotel, which is the only hotel on the airport grounds, and with a view as well. So after a quick round-up in the terminal I headed for my room to try and get some sleep and maybe a few extra planes as well. I managed indeed to spot a few more, but the lighting among the taxiways wasn’t very good, so it was difficult to catch the registrations of aircraft a bit further away. But all in all, I had a good, but short, night of sleep, although I wouldn’t have expected anything less at that price.

The following morning I woke up early to be able to spent a few hours at the airport. My flight was scheduled to depart at 0915 local time, so a very tasty breakfast was finished around 0620 and just 25 minutes later I was checked in and waiting in line for security checks. Again a bit of walking around the airport got me the best result. Besides a lot of Air Canada and Westjet, you’ll see lots of carriers from the US, quite a few bizzers and some aircraft near the Bombardier site. As the clock was approaching nine, it was time to go to the gate to board Air Canada’s A319 C-GARJ.

The next 5 hours were spent airborne on the way to San José, Costa Rica. Again a complimentary sandwich and beverage was offered and gladly accepted, I could get used to that. It turned out that I sat next to an old Dutch couple, although they emigrated to Canada almost 50 years earlier. After a pleasant chat, it was time to look outside, flying along the US coast and overhead the Caribbean. The seatbelt sign stayed on for quite a while, due to some moderate, but not very uncomfortable, turbulence. Touchdown was at 1339 local time and a few minutes later we parked right next to a Martinair A320. A bit strange to see a small MP aircraft (in new colors of course) this far away from home, especially when you keep in mind that their fleet of A320s in Europe has been returned to the lessor. The friend I was visiting here was waiting for me, so I just logged what was present and went on my way to baggage reclaim and immigration.

After spending a few days in the neighborhood of Heredia and San José, we headed towards the cloud/rain forests near Monteverde by bus. It took us past the Airport again, where I was able to read just one registration from the bus.

The following was seen at San José – Alajuela Santa Maria International on January 19th at +/- 0720 local time:

After 4 hours and 45 minutes of folding my legs against the back of the seat in front of me, I got out with sore knees in Monteverde, having spent the last 1,5 hour of the journey on very bumpy roads. After a day and a half of canopying and touring through the forests, we went to La Fortuna, a small touristic town near the Arenal volcano, one of the world’s top 10 most active. We were very lucky to catch some lava going down the side of the volcano just as our evening tour was about to end. The next morning we took a cab to the very small airport of La Fortuna to catch a flight via San José Pavas to Puerto Jiménez in the south. Nature Air’s Twin Otter TI-AZD took us to Pavas in just 20 minutes.

The following was seen at La Fortuna on January 22nd between 0740 and 0845 local time:

Nature Air is a small airline with an extensive route network in Costa Rica. They fly several times a day to most of their destinations, most of which are unreachable for regular airliners. Nature Air has a fleet of 6 DeHavilland Twin Otter’s, of which 4 are so-called Vistaliners. These are equipped with larger windows than a regular Twin Otter, which makes them very suitable for sightseeing flights. Besides these Twin Otters, they have 1 Beech 90 available for charters. They are based at San José Pavas Airport, located in the proximity of the capitol of Costa Rica, even closer than the larger Santa Maria airport, the main international gateway into the country.

We had about an hour and a half to spend at Pavas (Also known as Tobias Bolaño Airport). No time was wasted with security- or other checks, so we could head straight outside. It is not possible to walk along the hangars without passing some kind of checkpoint, so I did not even bother trying. If you turn right when leaving the terminal, you can walk next to the road to the top of a small hill, from where you have a limited view of the main platform, but no aircraft landing or taking-off will be missed. If the sun comes from the right direction, nice photo’s can be made as well. During the short time we were there, no-one bothered us at all.

Our next flight took us in exactly 45 minutes to the small strip of Puerto Jiménez on the Osa Peninsula. With just 5 seats of the 19 occupied, we cruised at 7000ft over the beautiful country in, again, a Twin Otter. This time it was TI-AZV, unfortunately not a Vistaliner. PJM only has a few flights a day, so when it is not in use, people just cross the runway walking with their groceries or ride a bike on the runway. Just prior to a departure or an arrival the people, dogs and chicken are shooed off the runway by one of the airport staff.

The afternoon was spent kayaking through mangroves and on the Pacific. The following morning we went with a guided tour that took us into secondary rainforest, a bit of primary rainforest and on the beaches along the coast. Late afternoon it was time to head back to San José. Fortunately I had the pleasure to fly with yet another Twin Otter of Nature Air, TI-AYQ this time.

It was time to start with the last long leg of my journey; back home. My friend had to go back to work, so I went to the airport a bit early. As I would be transiting through the US, I didn’t know what to expect securitywise, so getting there in time was probably the best thing to do, although in the end it wasn’t such a hassle as I had expected. Time flew the last week, as I realized my last hours in Costa Rica were just minutes away.

I was pleased to see that U.S Airways had chosen 757-200 N921UW for my flight to Charlotte, NC. This particular aircraft was delivered to Eastern in 1983 and only the 21st 757 ever built. The interior was a bit older as well, but the amount of legroom was fantastic. In 3 hours and 33 minutes we touched down at the world 11th largest airport by number of movements. It was dark, and the lighting was not very good, so not much was read during taxi. Once out of the aircraft I was unable to find a spot where the aircraft could be viewed properly (I was not properly prepared, so maybe there are some spots available once you get out.). Disillusioned I went to get my fingerprints and picture taken. I decided to get an early start the next morning and go straight to the hotel.

My hotel, the La Quinta Inn & Suites Charlotte South, was a 15 minute shuttle-bus ride away, and made for a very comfortable stay for a good price. The following morning, after a simple but tasty breakfast-buffet, I got at the airport at 0715. Not taking any chances with a closed Airport museum, I left that for what it was and would (luckily) have a very clear view of what was outside from my plane upon departure. I now saw that at departure level, 2 small parts of the apron could be seen, so a quick check in the freezing cold, and on towards check-in. I found a nice spot where I was able to see almost all the traffic. Around 10 ‘o clock, I had my first encounter of my trip with security. They were very friendly and asked to see my registration booklet and passport, repeatedly saying that I wasn’t doing anything illegal. One of them checked my name and passport number and the other browsed through my booklet, asking me to explain what the hobby was about. I did as I was asked and with the advice of not using my binoculars too frequently, they went away and let me be. I was not bothered again, and my stay at Charlotte came to an end as we left on U.S Airways Express CRJ-900 N902FJ to Washington Dulles, that started after a taxi-time of 33 minutes, as we were number 11 at the runway, that was used in mixed mode.

At seat number 4F, a window seat in a 2+2 configuration with nobody sitting next to me, I was truly amazed at the silence inside the cabin. I know, in a 900 the engines are a mile behind you, but still, not a sound. An amazing experience in an aircraft for me. A funny thing to see was that the interior was still America West all around. On the outside it was in the new USX colors. It took us just over 50 minutes to Washington, not nearly enough time for my registration administration.

With a few terminal buildings a small distance from each other, with a strange bus system connecting them, Washington Dulles is not a simple airport to spot at when airside. Inside these terminals, there aren’t a lot of windows, unfortunately. So I had to keep my feet moving again for a few hours, fortunately not bothered by any security personnel.

The following was seen at Washington Dulles International on January 25th between 1317 and 1749 local time:

The well-known United 767-300 N654UA brought me back to Schiphol in 6 hour 35 minute flight, but it was a rather uncomfortable one due to restricted legroom. Although I must say that UAL’s channel 9 is rather fun to listen to during departure and arrival. With touchdown on runway 27 at 0624 local time, my journey around the world ended where it started three weeks prior. A bit exhausted, but an unforgettable experience richer, I was back home after spending 61 hours and 1 minute airborne in the last three weeks.

Thanks very much for your attention, I hope you enjoyed it!

Gr.
Ard

PS. More photos and non-aviation related stories will follow on my website in time.

One of the best aviation reads I have had in a long time. Thanks a lot for sharing 8)
Lets hope it stays as it is, otherwise I think it is time to make a trip report category for excellent stuff like this :!:

Hiya Ard,

It sure is a nice trip report. Very enjoyable to read with Charlotte as a bit of a surprise to me. Seems worth to go there which I hadn't expected.

Hey, the Quicksilver GT500 UL-TI-030 that was in Pueto Jimenez, Costa Rica that day belongs to Mynor Mendoza.
It was nice to see your picture of it in this forum.
Congrats for your trip.
Best Regards.
