Spotting in Greece?

Hi all!

This year I will go on holiday on the great island Rhodes, Greece. Off course, it would be nice to catch some nice planes at the airport. But is it allowed to photograph airplanes on the airfield? I know there were two dutch spotters in Greece who became arrested by the police while they where spotting.... So what are the rules for Greece?

I won 't start my whole ranting again, most people here do know my opinion about Greece , but the simple answer is: spotting is not allowed in Greece. I understand that things have changed since 2001, but apart from visiting open days I wouldn't advise you to go to a greek airfield with a camera. I'm sure other people will have different experiences, but afaik the official rule is still: NO!
Hope you have a good time in Greece anyway, and with some care I'm sure you would be able to at least read off some aircraft...

The official definition as per law is:

On civil airports spotting is allowed, on mixed and military airports not.
Of course, like in this times anywhere in the world, it can be that police will come also on civil airports to ask you what you are doing, but they can not forbidden you to take pictures of civil planes on civil airports.

In your case, Rhodos is condidered a mixed airport, so spotting is not allowed. Of course, every year big numbers of tourists take pictures from planes and that´s why the police is a little bit more relaxed in Rhodos, in comparison with other airports.

Stay calm, follow the rules and you will not have any problems.

Yes, I had the idea to take some pictures from the plane if possible. I don't go to Greece for spotting, but it's always nice to catch some nice birds Again thanks for your information And IF I make some nice pictures, off course you'll find them in the Photoforum

Hi Danny,
where are you staying at Rhodos? Over Ixia/trianta planes are on final for RHO and enjoying the comfort of your swimmingpool reading of a/c shouldn't be a problem. I was in Ixia in 2001 (immediately after the 11-09-attacks), stayed at the resort and was quit able to spot a/c. Just some other tourists bothered my bins, but after explaining them what i was doing, they also started "spotting" ....

So enjoy your stay, but keep the remarks posted in mind!

I will stay in thw Oceanis Beach Hotel in Ixia. See on Google Maps the location on SPOT A


Hope there will be some traffic. That would be great! Spotting at the beach with nice temperatures and great planes
(and having a lot of beer.... it's all inclusive )

I knew there were a few topics like "Spotting in Italy" and more, but about Greece I couldn't find a topic,

I was standing at the end of Rhodos runway, and when civil aircraft flew by, nothing happened when I got out my camera. When a C-27J landed, within 5 minutes a civil guard was saying that I couldn't photograph 'certain' flights. On which I answered: Military? yes these are not allowed he replied. No need to show pictures or anything...

Thanks fiddler for this information, its logical that photographing military aircraft can be a problem.
But its also nice to see them flying

Spotting at Rhodos is not a problem.
Was there in november 2007, and spotted when i'll arived and departed.
And also the whole week from the Beach.
Small aircraft turn in very short, so you can't read them.

Spotting on civiel airports is allowed in Greece, see a topic around 2007 from

My hotel was around C and D on your map!!
Many planes read under their wings.
