My take on Aviation Nation 2011

Post by FrankCrebas »

I had a Nice day out on Saturday 12 November at Nellis AFB. Moderate weather and some nice participants to watch. It was my first time to photograph the Thunderbirds and I was not disappointed.

Nellis is quite tricky in terms of light conditions and therefor I searched and found a place that made it a little bit easier. This spot was near the bus drop-off point and opposite to the Nellis terminal. This spot allowed me to photograph the topsides in a nice banking angle (with reasonable light) and I had the advantage to see the jets taxiing by after their display when they left the runway.
Please enjoy my selection of my last aviation event of the year!

I really loved the T-33!

Very nice pictures Frank, I like the taxi shots a lot. Could you give us some more information about the place? Was it a public place where everybody could go? How many mm's did you use for the taxi shots? Did you need stairs?
Thanks in advance for the answers.

Thanks all! yes, it was a public place and again, it was near the Bus stops and close to the HH-60 ramps. I used max 400mm on my Canon 1D mkIV. It was a place that was not too popular by the photographing crowd.... I was there with very few other photographers. It only became crowded when the Thunderbirds started their demo. This place was close to the food joints as well 8)

As for the F-4: it as a converted QF-4 drone. This means that it can be operated my one single person ( or even unmanned). I must admit that a 2nd person in the jet would look much better.

Forget the static BTW....

Very neat set of pics Frank!
It was my first time at Aviation Nation too and I choose for the mobile stands in front of the Thunderbirds line-up platform. No problems there with other people in your camera sight and a slightly elevated position which came in handy with the very low passes of some participants.
To be honest I never even thought of choosing position near the bus drop-off point but it looks like a great place too.

René
