Turku International Airshow 2011 (FIN) - 18June

Post by Flygvapnet_Viggen »

On the weekend of the 18th and 19th of June, the first Turku International Airshow took place in (of course) Turku, Finland. Not only was it the first time to organise this show, it was also the first time to have the USAF Thunderbirds over in Finland! Besides, the Thunderbirds there were displays from the Finnish Air Force by the Midnight Hawks, F18 and Hawk as well as the whole arsenal of the Finnish Border Guard along with some older types and the Dutch F16 demo team. Weather forecasts were not so promising, but I took the boat to Turku anyways and arrived Saturday morning when indeed it was raining. It did not stop raining till around noon, in fact it got worse and at a moment it was pooring rain. As a result the first half of the show was cancelled. No problems, because the most interesting stuff was to fly after 1pm. Then the sky cleared and no rain was seen anymore, even a few sun rays peeked through the clouds. The dark clouds and humid air left behind made for some awesome creative photography during the flying displays! Maybe I'm happy it was not just 'another sunny + blue sky airshow' again! ;)

I'd rather depict atmosphere and the 'heat of the moment' making a catchy photo than to reflect the real situation and real colours showing a boring photo.

Very nice those 'arty farty' pics but most of all I like the pictures you made from the rajavartiolaitos aircraft! :thumb: For me this is really something different.

(By the way, as far as I know Rajavartiolaitos is the Finnish border guard... )

Corné, great diversity in your shots, it's better looking than all the standard sunny stuff we always shoot. Bad but clear weather is awesome photography material :)
