NH-90 Torpedo dropping 05-11-2010

Post by WhiskeyDelta »

Hi there,

A bit out of date but still within the six months.

1. The test setup
Image

2. The torpedo mounted on the NH-90, also mention the small camera and the extended pitot (I guess)
Image

3. Unfortunately, just when the NH-90 dropped the torpedo, I was busy with my camera settings and I could only capture the 'splash'...

4.

Very nice, not something many of us will ever see!
But the question now is..... did they sink the target

Pity. I guess you weren't near a radio on which the "countdown" could be heard...

Ah well, we will probably see not that many photos in future of Dutch NH-90s toting torpedoes...

Very interesting pics, but....... even from such a short distance they don't manage to hit the boat.

@ Stratofighter: nope, I had no radio with me.. :x Stupid me!

@ Gerard: yep, pilots from the Navy huh...

@ LV84: true, in the video you can see they performed also tests from higher altitude and on speed. I guess they did the test on the Noordsee instead of Marsdiep (unfortunately  )

Another nice fact to know I've heard: the parachute of one of the torpedoes didn't go open so that one is still on the bottom of the sea

The small parachute at the back of the torpedo is not used to slow the torpedo down. Then they would use a bigger one.
It's main task is to create drag at the rear end of the torpedo, to make sure it falls down head first. As you see in the videos, it does not have much effect when dropped from low altitudes. From higher altitudes it creates enough drag to stabilize the torpedo and have it go nose down, so it isn't damaged at impact on the water.
