Hi all,
My apologies for the delay in posting part two of my Rhodos shots, but I had too little time the last few days. Anyway, for photospots I would like to refer to
http://www.air-born.gr/planespotting/He ... map_en.php" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; which helped me a lot.
This part includes taxi- and landing shots near the airport perimeter fence. Most of them are taken at spot 1 of the air-borne,gr map (from early morning till about 15.00), some of them at spot 2 and spot 3 or in between (from late afternoon on) and a few I took near spot 2 but I was sitting at the beach under shady trees.
I visited spot 2 several times and was not bothered once by police or military
although I did not have a very inconspicuous car (bright yellow). The only time I saw police (only in the mirrors of my car) was some 15 minutes before a nice visitor arrived (Air China 767) for what I think was an official Chinese visit. The only patrolling was done by the Israeli security who were checking out the place every time there were flights of Arkia and Sun d’Or. I explicitly asked the guy if he had any problems with me photographing aircraft, and he replied “no not al all” and gave me a thumbs-up.
Part 3 I will post as soon as possible and will contain some nice take-off shots taken from the slopes of the hill near the airport (spot 8 on the air-borne.gr map).
Brgds, Peter
OK, let’s start with the photos:
15. First a shot of spot 2 itself. It is in between some houses. You have to watch out for the thrust of some aircraft, especially the biggies, like in this example, a 747-400 of Transaero:
16. Every Sunday morning a nice IL-96:
17. Transaero visits Rhodos two times a week (Thursdays and Sundays) with a 747-400 (plus one 737-500 flight):
18. Occasionally a bizjet drops by:
19. Lots of Aegeans, in this case an Airbus 321:
20. Air Comet every morning operating for Olympic:
21. A close-up of the Golden Sun:
22. Sunday is the busiest day with lots of Thomas Cook Scandinavia flights (A320, A321, A330)
23. Very nice surprise: Air China Boeing 767-300 on an official visit:
24. Ofcourse lots of Olympic regionals like this ATR:
25. But also some Dash-8 flights. This one turns in short from the East:
26. A Transaero 747-400 lining up:
27. The Niki Bee:
28. Still in the old Mytravel colours (much better than Thomas Cook):
29. CentralWings is dead, long live LOT Charters:
30. A Transaero 737-500:
31. Romavia is operating into Rhodos once a week with the 146:
32. Athens Airways operates a two-daily schedule between Athens and Rhodes with Erj-145 equipment (they have 3 now):
33. Once a week Rossya is sending a 767 instead of the dull A319’s:
34. Jettime 737-300 with winglets:
35. Ooooh. Nice visitor this Alenia C-27J Spartan. I saw a few from my hotel but this was the only one I photographed (shutterspeed at 1/80):
36. And another nice one: SCAT 757, once weekly with a FlyLAL Charters call-sign (LLC) on the route Vnukovo-Dalaman-Rhodos-Vnukovo.
Then to the fence at the other side (between spot 2 and 3). You need a small stepladder of some sort to get over the fence here. The only disadvantage here is the grass, which needs to have a cut. Photographing arriving planes is no problem as they have not yet touched down.
37. Transaero 747-400 lining up runway 25:
38. Air Slovakia still operates this all white 757:
39. Two times a week Aeroflot Nord comes in with a 737.
I also took some shots near spot 2, but then near the beach where some trees gave me shade.
40. Another 146 operator is Astra Airways which comes in every day around 16.30 with this ex Air Dolomiti aircraft:
41. TUIfly Nordic flies in with 737-800 and 757-200:
42. ItAli Airlines was not on my list, but was a welcome visitor:
43. Travel Service alsof lies in a lot with 737’s as well as Airbus:
Thats is for this part. Part 3 coming up….
