MIG-29 UB flight 1995

Post by Andras »

Hi all,

From the old box (Oude doos) a small compilation made in 1995 when i flew in a Hungarian Mig during a Squadron rotation. I was there as a translator since the Hungarian pilots didn't speak English very well. At the time i was working as a radar specialist at AOCS NM. Part of my daily work was to simulate pilots (r/t)and aircraft (control radar plots) for Fighter-Control training purposes.

The rotation was with the former Twente squadron 313 (Tiger). The mission this time was a 1 v 1 DBFM. We did 3 setups.

Most pictures were made with an analog camera, (Canon, EOS 600, a Hungarian crewchief shot the pics of me getting ready) and the shots inside the plane with an klik-klak Kodak throw away cam. So the quality is not what i would like it to be.

Enjoy

1. Getting ready, checking all the gear
Image

2. All aboard!
Image

3. Final checks, man that oxy mask is hard! and you have very little room for turning your head
Image

4. Taxing past the QRA.
Image

5. Take-off, mil power at first- then Ab and nose up all the way (Still mad he did'nt take pics of that!)
Image

6. Forming up with our Detco. He has a Hungarian pilot in the back. In fact the smallest pilot ever flying in a MIG. He had a special seat.
Image

7. Holding hands en-route to the training area.
Image

8. Other side, nice little sun. And the colorful squadron markings back then still looking good on these oldies.
Image

9. View from the gun camera. Just moments later we slice this Viper in half. The pilot i flew with was a real cowboy. He was just degraded from LT-Kol to Maj. When i asked him why, he told me it was because of a birdhit he had. I said that i was suprised to hear that because a birdhit is usually not a biggie. He answered " That is true, but this bird was still in a tree.... " > So amusing when you still have to land with this dude! :D Note that all info is metrical!

Can we please do it again?
Image

10. Landing view through the periscope system. Note the G-force dial at the left side. "Please no more than 7 G's gentlemen, "this is due to structural repairs after pulling G's, and they don't have a lot of spare parts (Or money in this case). We pulled 9 G's, thank you! And that seat is almost in an upright position.

11. Touchdown!

OK that's the funniest thing I heard all week
Thanks guys, it was the best thing ever. The flight was actualy on my birthday as well..

The story goes on a little further...

As he told me he hit a tree with his Mig, he thought "Oh well, maybe no-one knows so see no evil hear no evil". As soon as he touched down and taxied back to his parkingplace he noticed some crewchiefs and mechanics pointing and waving at him. He did'nt think of anything strange so he waved back. As he told the story i was laughing my ass off, and this was in between setups with him not understanding one word of English. (I speak Hungarian for those who wonder how?!?....)
As he parked his Mig and disembarked the plane, he soon found out what all the comotion was about. Looking at his left intake he saw the remains of what used to be a tree, branches were sticking through his intake fuselage! Then as he got closer he saw remains of a birds-nest stuck inbetween branch an intake. So, that is how everybody knew he had a birdhit while flying too low.

Very nice story Andras..

Damn, I can still remember the return week of 4 MiG-29's at Twenthe...
The term 'short circuit for runway 24' got a very different meaning in that week.

One of the MiG's pulled out into a half loop, and flying back the way it came.. with an Twenthe bird on approach.
