TABOR's and TREND's at Lakenheath

Post by dinger »

A rewarding hour or so in tricky light produced the following images at RAF Lakenheath today. Firstly the last two remaining 95th FS F-22A's departed as TABOR 33 flight. Sadly for the crews, the trip across the Atlantic was shelved when TABOR 34 (04-4081) developed an ECS problem and couldn't carry on. Therefore both jets returned after burning fuel off to await repairs.

Not long after the F-22s arrived back, two 366th FW F-15E's belonging to the 391st FS 'Bold Tigers' arrived as TREND 03 flight. These guys have been busy judging by the multiple mission marks carried.

The first 4 F-22A's that arrived as part of the exercise did so without external tanks. The next two waves of 4 all had external tanks fitted. When they all departed, 3 went minus external tanks.
I think the first 4 arrived as part of a Rapid Raptor deployment package, hence no tanks.

Dinger.

These photos clearly show what kind of a "low rider" the Raptor is compared to the Eagle.

Souda Bay is where the Mountain Home F15s arrived from.

On a side note: always wondered why Souda is called Souda Bay... The bay is the water in the bay area, from the mediterranean, the base is called Souda.

perhaps as a pendant for Subic Bay in the Phillipines? Both are/have large US Navy facilities. I think the port is called Souda Bay (as that's where it's located) and the HAF airfield (which is a few miles away from the port anyway) is just called Souda. At least, that's what the HAF calls it; to civvies it is known as Chania
