Thanks for the 100% crop Marcel. I'm not flabbergasted, just think that's what to expect from such an expensive piece of glass... I'm curious if you have some 100% crops when using the 2x extender.

Hi Richard,

I don't see any difference between ISO 200 and ISO 400. Actually I dare to shoot at ISO 800 without hesitation.

One year ago, when I just bought the EOS-1D Mark IV I did a ISO-noise test myself. The result can be seen below. Depending on the use of my shots I feel I can go all the way up to ISO 3200 without getting into troubles. With a 4896 x 3264 resolution the noise at ISO 3200 still doen't affect my photos when reduced to screen size, and for larger prints it can still be overcome with Noise Ninja / Lightroom.

Here are the results of the ISO-noise test, taken at night along the A28. The first GIF is the full size image reduced to 900 x 600, the second is a 900 x 600 crop of 100% photo (e.g. 1 pixel from the camera is 1 pixel on your screen).

Hope this helps,
Iwan

I don't mean to be rude, but this clearly is a topic for the dedicated Photography Forum rather than this Aviation Photo Forum...

Yes, it is....

Erik, most people will have seen the Wittmund photos in the in this area, so if you could move the whole topic to the Photography area, I would be pleased.

Thanks,
Iwan

That test doesn't count Iwan. It was done in the dark. During daylight your results should be... better

Thanks Iwan,

It's only fairly recently that I switched to digital SLR's and have basically stuck to ISO200. Have been a bit hesitant to use higher ISO's but this is very convincing.

Please keep in mind that Iwan's test is done with a 1dIV. Using an other camera will give other results. But don't be afraid to test higher ISO's. It won't cost you any film.
