Netherlands AF/KLu displays

Post by NWest »

Hey guys,

I'm currently doing some research into the displays mounted down the years by the Royal Netherlands AF/KLu.

Obviously the likes of the Grasshoppers, F-27, F-16, and Double Dutch NF-5 duo spring particularly to mind.

I was just wondering whether there were any other memorable display teams or solo displays put on by the KLu further back in the past? (I'm only 23 so my memories don't go back a huge way!)

I'm thinking of putting together an article about this, so any help would be appreciated.

I'd be interested in all sorts of info - aircraft, pilots, paint schemes, display routines/manoeuvres, particular memories. The more the better!

Thanks

See if you can obtain a copy of the book ´Demoteams van de Konklijke Luchtmacht´ by Antoon Louwers. It handles all display teams of the KLu from 1922 till 1988 (when the book was printed).

PC-7, Airpower demos (since 1997), maybe base attacks?

Have you visited the Hall of Fame at http://www.f16demoteam.nl" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; already?

Dash Four, flying Thunderstreaks in the 50's. I think the first demoteam of the RNLAF.

Yes, I have. Very informative.

Thanks for the hints so far.

Do any of you have memories regarding particular manoeuvres that the solo displays have flown?

Another fact I'd like to check - the Airpower demos have only taken place since 1997? And it was base attacks before that (eg F-16s at Twenthe, Volkel etc)?

No, the first RNLAF demoteam must have been "Vijf vingers aan één hand" (5 fingers on one hand) with the Fokker D-VII, in the 1920's.

Strictly speaking, in the 1920's that wouldn't be RNLAF yet, but the LVA, the Luchtvaartafdeling.

But even so, before Dash Four there were already some other teams. Hunter teams, Meteor teams and others. Mostly however, these were flying on special occasions only and not really full seasons or multiple seasons.

Afirm, The reason why they changed from base attacks to the Airpower demos was because in 1997 there were no home-based F-16s for the base attack, as Gilze-Rijen was a helibase already at that time. The reason why UK Lynxes were used that year was because the Dutch were to display at the Navydays that took place at the same weekend, to coincide with Sail Den Helder '97.
