A question does anybody no how high the gras is in the spotters area. I saw some pictures on facebook with really high gras in front off the airplanes you can't see wheels any more. A couple off years ago it was the same way. Way to high gras for good quality pictures on the runway.

Thanks
The gras is very high on the 26 side. Only pictures possible when aircraft are landing. This is also nice :)

Next to that taxi track leading towards runway 26 was out of commision on the 8th of June due to construction works. Aircraft follow a different taxi pattern as normally. Meaning aircraft have to cross the main runway and follow the taxi track on the north side to line up at runway 26. Do not know if the construction works were only scheduled for that day or that these works take a longer period.

So currently no use for a stepledder at Florennes? Or still needed to shoot landing shots like above over the fence? Sorry haven't been there in a loooong time.. :-)

A question for spotters with previous experiences ...

Image

If I look at this map am I right about the following?

Taxiway with backlight, so only sun behind you facing the runway?
Distance to the runway aprox. 200m?
And the place near the runway seems somewhat crowded for 700+ people?

- Indeed taxiway is backlight
- Distance I do not know
- Wind from the south-east expected on thursday. Runway 08 will be in use then. So aircraft will already be in the air.

In the past aircraft used the taxiway which is now spotterarea to taxi to the former TLP platform. You can only hope this is also done during this day.

I advise to take a stepledder when you want to take pictures from outside the base if runway 26 is in use. It will not help with the high gras but it helps you with the fence. Fence height is about 1.60 meter with some barbed wire. Other side, runway 08, I do not know. In the past (TLP times) you did not need a stepledder for landing aircraft at runway 08 side. Only you had to watch out for the bulls .

Thanks Hornet69. If so this is also backlight in the morning and only better light late in the afternoon ...

Overall it does not seem like a great place for photography then ... or am I wrong?

It all depends how photo minded the TWM organisation is. If they let the aircraft taxi along the spotters (like on other spottersdays in the past) it will be OK, I think. But I do not know if this will be the case this year.

Runway shots with 08 in use; takeoff will be difficult as F-16's, Hawks and Eufi's need not much runway. Maybe some luck with the Phantoms and Migs.

...anf if the gras is not cut you can forget landing shots on the runway as aircraft is on the concrete and the height of the gras will be an obstruction, next to heathaze.

Runway shots with 26 in use; takeoff for F-16's, Hawks and Eufi's are OK as they just are off the ground. More difficult for the Phantoms and Migs. The height of the gras, if not cut, will be obstruction, next to heathaze.

...and for landing shots same apply here: if the gras is not cut you can forget landing shots on the runway as aircraft is on the concrete and the height of the gras will be an obstruction, next to heathaze.

Just see what will happen this day. Just enjoy and let's hope the TWM orgaisation understands most of us spotters would like to take good pictures of the aircraft.

I recently read that not-mowing is a tactic against birds who really like fresh mown grass! Therefore not bloody likely I would say...
