The Kuopio-Rissala airport/air base is located in central Finland and home to a squadron (Hävittäjälentolaivue) of Hornets and some Hawks and smaller propeller aircraft. The civil airport is rather small and only hosts some domestic flights. Though the number of spots on this base is very limited it is still a place to visit when you're in the country.
The base has one functioning runway (15/33, the other one is not in use anymore). The jet fighters are located southwest of the runway crossing. Nothing can be seen from this. The smaller military aircraft are normally parked near a small hangar in the northeast quadrant of the base. The civil terminal is located in the northwest corner.
The base is located around 10 kilometers north east of the town of Kuopio. Once you have reached Kuopio you can not miss the airport since it is clearly sign posted.
The viewing terrace on the civil terminal is a great platform for photography (Photo Arnold ten Pas)
