Alabama Red Tails Lightnings get colours

Recently, Alabama Air National Guard's 100th Fighter Squadron and active-duty Air 377th Fighter Squadron, part of the 187th Fighter Wing at Dannelly Field, near Montgomery (AL), unveiled its traditional red tail flash on a new Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II honouring the Red Tails legacy of the WW2 Tuskegee Airmen.

Having previously operated F-16C/Ds for more than a decade, the red tail flashes were a common sight on the 187th FW Fighting Falcons. Scramble reported earlier on the final days of the Vipers in that unit.

F-35A, 18-5420, is the first Lightning to get a red tail flash and also representing the 187th FW flagship aircraft.

On 8 December 2023, Scramble Magazine wrote about the arrival of the first AL coded F-35As at Dannelly.
