Dia de Base Aberta - Open Day Base Aérea nº 1

Well, my expectations has been too high, that’s for sure. The two TB.30s were
the only active Portuguese hardware on the static, there wasn’t even a based aircraft
there. Luckily the maintenance hangar was open, which held the complete fleet of gliders
plus four out of six remaining Chipmunks. 1306 is stored in dismantled condition and will
probably not fly again, due to lack of spares. I had (on purpose) arrived at the wrong gate
where I asked and got permission to photograph the preserved T-38 and L-23 and then moved on
to the gate near the museum for the open day. The static mainly consisted of small civilian
stuff, with a few ex-mil included luckily. The flying program was also rather small, with a
few of the aircraft from the static doing some flyby’s and the two Vipers doing four fast passes.
At the very end of the afternoon the C-130 arrived to do some sky baptisms for people who won a
lottery. This was supposed to be a C.295, but that wasn’t available due to operational reasons and
was last minute replaced by a Hercules. There are only two of these operational at the moment (with
both C-130H-30 being upgraded at OGMA), and the one destined to do the baptism flights broke down.
Therefor everybody had to wait for the other one to return from an operational mission and then have
the configuration changed so it could take the PAX. Confirmed as still present, but unfortunately in
a closed building, is the Chippax simulator (1328).

Out of pure boredom I also wrote down all present purely civilian aircraft, to have a full report
of the show:

A great collection, spread out over two halls plus some aircraft outside. The Noratlas poses
a problem, there are three plates inside next to each other, with one showing N.2502 c/n 6,
the next one N.2501 c/n 185 (both c/n plates from SNCAN) and a third plate from the Portuguese
Oficinas Gerais Material Aeronautico giving the type as 2502A, the No. de FAP as 6403 and the No
de Serie as 193. However EMOOS gives it as really 6405 marked as 6403 and c/n 6/183. I am confused…..
Former Swiss Do.27 HB-HAC, painted as ‘3422’ was recently reported here as well, but I did not see
any sign of that. Where is it, has it gone?
