The 75th anniversary of the Battle of Normandy was commemorated by Operation Piper Cobra, a four-day celebration with activities in the Granville-Jullouville area. The name refers to the Piper Cub aircraft that were used after D-Day for artillery spotting and liaison flights, as well as to Operation Cobra, the allied outbreak of the beachhead.
On Sunday a modest air show was organized over the Jullouville beach during which an above average number of Piper Cubs took part, besides a number of war birds and modern military aircraft.
This part of Normandy was not chosen by coincidence: general Dwight D. Eisenhower, in his capacity of Supreme Allied Commander Europe, set up the Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force (SHAEF) in Jullouville.
The Patrouille de France and A380 F-WWOW performed one fly past in formation, after an amazing solo display of the A400M. F-GHMQ and F-GKLS provided VIP transport in the area.
