Fighter jet approaching the Israeli side of the Golan reportedly shot down by a surface-to-air Patriot missile
Israeli forces on Tuesday shot down a Syrian fighter jet that infiltrated the country's aerial space.
Initial reports said the intercepted aircraft was a drone
, however this was soon ruled out.
"This Syrian aircraft, apparently a MiG-21 (fighter jet),
which was approaching the Israeli side of the Golan,
was shot down by a surface-to-air Patriot missile," Israel's army radio said.
The wreckage of the aircraft landed on the Syrian-controlled side of the strategic plateau, it added.
This is the first instance of Israel downing a Syrian plane since 1989.
Israeli Defense Forces' spokesperson said on Twitter the incident is being investigated.
The incident could represent an accidental spillover of the warfare raging in Syria.
