Spotting @ Grosetto and Pisa

Post by Polleke_NL »

I'm off for my holidays shortly, this time to Italy, somewhere between Pisa and Grosetto. Can anyone tell me what the spotting conditions are like over there, and - of possible - the best spots to go ?? (including W&R)

TIA

Hello

With caution, spotting is no problem at both.A track follows the eastern perimeter fence at Pisa,so turn off the SS1 just south of the base and via the overpass, cross the railway and pass the extended centreline, then turn left to acquire the track. This is best early in the morning, with the sun to the east.

Hello,

Here is a website where you can find a map and discriptions to get there. In the menu you find 'how to spot' there you find the info you need for Pisa Airport. http://digilander.libero.it/pisairport/eng/index.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; . Pictures I take at Pisa ae here http://www.sidewinderpics.fotopic.net/c658823.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; all taken at spot A.

For Grosetto I've some coördinates where you can take good pics of landing aircraft. I hope it works because I don't know to put the points in this message. Here they come, 42°46'35.11"N 11° 5'4.33"O , this is at the north side of the field. For the south side, 42°44'41.17"N 11° 3'38.72"O . I take the coördinates from Google Earth.

Good luck and i hope it helpes you further.

As per the Pisa Spotters website which Arthur quoted, spotting is still very much considered a crim ein Italy (as per pre-WW2 laws issued by mr. Mussolini) and people are warned to be very cautious when taking pictures of aircraft on the ground (and buildings)..

Does anyone has any (recent) experience on the police's behaviour towards spotters or should I pre-warn my boss that my holiday might get extended for an undefined period ??

A few years ago we were kicked away from Roma Ciampino by the police, even though we were standing in a residential area watching arrivals.

So they`re not to happy with it.

If you stand on the bridge over the railway (spot A) you have got a nice view on the landing aircraft and you are far away from the fence. And if you stand behind the bushes so you have no view on the airfield it's no problem in my opinion. When I was at Pisa I saw no police, but there drove a truck with I asume a guard inside on regular base.

Let me know when you are back from Italy, because I go the last three weeks of August to Toscane. maybe you can tell me if it's possible to take pictures of the stored aircraft.
