Nice Niels! :-)

According to Scramble DB this is a KC-135RG, not a C-135FR (one of three in service). I don't know the difference, although it's not about the A/A kit configuration that is fitted, because that varies through the whole fleet. So it must be something else. Anyone? Are these the only active recently-ex-USAF ones for example?

It's a former USAF KC-135R indeed. Three were delivered after the originals. The only external difference I know of are the antennas. Take a look at C-135FR pictures and you'll see differences in the tail (back side) and the big on the top of the fuselage.

Were the KC-135RG from their delivery in 1997 called as such? Some articles online call them C-135FR, and were upgraded to KC-135RG.
I've seen all three, but in my DB I've called them C-135FR. Maybe this is wrong.....

I've always written them as KC-135R (the 'G' is also new to me), but I don't know if that is the real French designation.

http://www.journal-aviation.com/actuali ... odernisent mentions KC-135RG indeed. The three aircraft the Adl'A bought from USAF in the nineties were still KC-135Rs when acquired, and were never C-135FRs...

A total of three French KC-135RG tankers have been upgraded by the US to primarily ensure compliance with the RENO global air traffic management (GATM) standard.

The new interface is claimed to enable navigation standards identical to those of US KC-135s and more efficient and secure integration into general air traffic.

The US engineers also equipped the aircraft with a high-frequency wire antenna while preserving the on-board intercom specific to the French aircraft, in addition to re-configuring the tanker to carry standard cargo pallets.

These were handed over in 2014.
