General

Hagerstown–Washington County Regional Airport is located 70 miles northwest from Washington DC and 75 miles west of Baltimore, on the southern border of Pennsylvania. It used to be a home to a Fairchild Aircraft Company where C-119, C-123 and C-82 were born and built. Currently the only scheduled airline to HGR is Sun Air International with four daily flights to Washington-Dulles. Allegiant Air operates twice weekly charter flights to Orlando with MD-80. HGR is the closest airport to president’s country residence at Camp David. It is not uncommon to see C-32s, C-40s and C-37s on the ramp.
There are three major companies operating at the airport: Northrop Grumman, converting US Navy P-3s for Dept of Homeland Security, Augusta Westland, refitting and upgrading helicopters for US Coast Guard and Sierra Nevada Corp converting Beech King Airs (C-12s) for the US Army. Therefore Hagerstown sees a lot of military traffic. Also, a lot of experimental frames pass through this airport. Finally Air North's Douglas C-47A Skytrain N983DC is based here.

Layout

Hagerstown Washington County Regional has two cross runways, 9/27 east-west & 2/20 north-south 2/20. The passenger terminal is located on the southern part of the airport. Augusta Westland and Northrop Grumman occupy the eastern part of the airport property. HGR aviation museum is located behind Northrop’s hangars. Sierra Nevada Corp, GA hangars and all FBOs are located on the entire northern part of the airport.

Getting There

To get to Hagerstown airport you will have to drive for about an hour from either Baltimore or Washington D.C. This is a perfect pit stop airport if you travel to Pennsylvania. You never know which gem is hidden on the ramps. From D.C. take I-270 North, then take I-70 West and after few miles take I-81 North. The airport is right off the highway. From Baltimore take highway I-70 North/West and follow it all the way to the airport.

Around the Airport

1West side terminal area

On the west side of the terminal there is a small hill. From there you can see airplanes parked on the ramps around the terminal. Also, inside of the terminal (past security) you have unobstructed views of most of the ramps.

2East side terminal area

On the east side of the terminal there is a grassy knoll with the trees. You can walk there and view the action on the runway 9/27, and surrounding ramps. Also, from there you can see the action on runway 2/20 and have clear view of the Northrop Grumman and Augusta ramps.

3Storage ramps

Driving from the terminal turn left on Showalter Road towards Pennsylvania Avenue. Turn left on Penn Avenue and take first left to Oak Spring Road. Drive up the hill until you pass old Fairchild hangar. Park your car in the parking spot and you can walk the fence all the way to the spot no.4. From this spot you can see airplanes waiting for conversion at NGC.

4Aviation Museum

From spot no.3 you can walk along the fence or you can drive 300 metres until you arrive at the airport gate. Unfortunately, this museum is only open during events, but you can photograph or read all the frames on display. Also, from this spot you can see action on runway 9/27.

5General Aviation ramps

From spot 4 go back to Penn Ave and drive north. You will pass under the recent extension of runway 27. After you have passed the runway, take the first left and drive towards the FBO. From there you will have view of both runways and long term storage ramp. Plus, you will face GA hangars and active ramps. You can continue your tour on Henson Blvd and Air Park Road, but you should not stay around those FBOs too long. There is a lot of military contractors and they do not like photographers or spotters.
