To the northeast of London, you can find Stansted Airport. It is officially the third airport of London and handles a variety of scheduled, charter and executive traffic. Among the scheduled airlines are Ryan Air and easyJet. Stansted also handles a lot of cargo traffic, like Nippon Cargo, Korean Air, UPS and FedEx, most of it during the evening and night.

The runway designation has been changed from 05/23 to 04/22 per 2 July 2009.

Getting There

You can take a bus from Heathrow or Gatwick, or a train from London-Liverpool Street or Cambridge/Peterborough. A couple of National Express bus services also stop at the main terminal.

Around the Airport

The main terminal is on the eastern side of the runway and includes the main cargo ramp. At the left side of the terminal, a small hill gives you a view over part of the concourses and the cargo apron. You can not see much of the aircraft parked on the other side.

2The north side

On the opposite side of the airfield is the old terminal, which is now a maintenance area, where you also can find the bizjet traffic. Without a car, it is nearly impossible to go there, as there is no public transport in that area. By car, you can drive over to the north side, clockwise on the perimeter road, and have a look at the executive aprons.
Photography is difficult if not nearly impossible here due to a lot of fences, but usually you are able to identify most aircraft parked here.

3Runway 04

At the threshold of runway 04, it is possible to take good landing shots, unfortunately it is not possible (yet) to park there.

4Runway 04/22

Along this runway, there is a spot where you can park your car, next to the road. Then walk through the bushes and you are next to the airport fence. From this place, you have a good view of all the movements as you are directly opposite the terminal. It can be reached from spot 3 by exiting the entrance to the north side of the airport and go right on the Bury Lodge Lane. Follow this, near the M11, it will bend right, back to the airport. Spot 4 is on the stretch running parallel to the runway. There is also a crash gate a bit further on, but do not park there.

5Runway 22

From spot 4, continue on the road which bends north, away from the airport, the Tye Green road. After about 2 km, there is a triangular cross road, go right. Make a right, 500 metres down this road onto the main road, Hall road. After the sharp bend to the left, take the first small road right, Green Street. This is a minor road from Gaunt's end. You can get to a point just below the 22 approach. There is space to park around three cars here without annoying anyone. Good photos can be taken from the road here with a 200 mm lens. You can also walk parallel to the approach from spot 4 along a footpath.

A short walk into the field from spot 5 enables photography of landings on 22 even in the morning. (Fred Willemsen)
