General

Fliegerhorst Landsberg am Lech, also known as Penzing, used to be the southernmost transport base of the German Air Force. It housed a wing of C-160D Transall aircraft and UH-1Ds of the same unit. Reading and photography were OK here.

The Luftwaffe left Landsberg in September 2017, after which only the local flying clubs remained. Its status as an airfield was finally cancelled in August 2020. The preserved Noratlas was still there in 2022, visible from spot 3.

Layout

The base is very open on the south side enabling clear views of the east-west runway. All ramps and buildings are on the north side, with the northeast holding the helicopter ramp and hangar.

Getting There

Landsberg am Lech is situated along the highway A96/E54, halfway between Memmingen and München. You have to take the easternmost exit of the highway to avoid searching for the right road in Landsberg itself. The rest is almost self-explanatory.

Around the Airport

1South side ramp view

Taking exit 26 from the highway takes you to Penzing on the Münchenerstraße/ Landsbergerstraße (St2054). Just before you reach Penzing and the base fence, there is an opportunity to follow a path along the fence into the farmland until you are opposite the ramps (and do not forget the western part of it).
This path will not always be accessible by car. However, this is the prime location for a clear view of the Transall ramps, so it is instrumental to use this spot. You can also reach it by venturing into the farmland from the two first left-hand side paths from the Münchenerstraße after leaving the highway.

2East side approach

Continuing to Penzing you have to keep the base to your left. Taking the third exit at the roundabout, Kauferinger Strasse, rather than following the through road, will lead you to the eastern approach that is on the outskirts of the village.

3Northeast side ramp view

When exiting Penzing on the Kauferingerstraße you will be able to catch a glimpse of some of the Huey ramps. Buildings, undergrowth, and the way they are parked obstruct a clear view, but some can be logged. The odd Transall you might have missed because others were in the way, can be scored also.

4West side approach

Still on the Kauferingerstraßse and still following the base, you have to head west on the small road to Ziegenstadel. Do not go north to Untermühlhausen, this will be a detour. In Ziegenstadel you will meet the main road to Landsberg am Lech, follow this south (St2052). You will pass the landing lights and will have to find a spot in the farmland here, probably the track leading to the fence.
