Sønderborg airport is situated in southeast Jylland (Jutland) on the Kær peninsula and serves the Danish-German border area. It has several flights to Copenhagen daily by Cimber Sterling and is also home to Air Alsie.
A single 14/32 runway is bordered by a fjord on the east side, the terminal can be found on the west side. The airport is situated in a rural area with hardly any access to both runway thresholds. For the adventurous, it should be possible to walk at least part of the shoreline, but views are hindered by back light from here.
The airport can be found about 5 km north of the town of Sønderborg, which is about 30 km north east of the German city of Flensburg.
Around the Airport
With a lack of good spots around the runway, the terminal area is the best place to see and photograph aircraft at Sønderborg. On the right hand side of the terminal and at the back of the main hangar you can get close to the action and even graph aircraft taxiing on the runway and on the connecting taxiway. Photography is best in the end of the afternoon.
2Approach 32 - west side
The only other option known gives distant views of the southern approach. From the terminal area, head back to the town of Sønderborg. After a few hundred meters you will have to find yourself a parking spot along the road and try your best. As with spot 1, photography is best later in the afternoon. About 300 mm will do from here for larger aircraft.
