In June 2021, the US Navy purchased an E-3D Sentry AEW1 from the Royal Air Force for USD 15 million, intending to convert it into a TE-6B in-flight trainer (IFT). However, a later assessment concluded that the cost of conversion and restoration to airworthiness no longer offered a favourable return on investment.

As a result, the Navy issued a stop work order on the contract with Northrop Grumman Corp. in November 2023.

The aircraft (BuNo 170508, ex-RAF ZH104) is now designated for parts harvesting and disposal by Northrop Grumman. The recovered components—estimated to exceed the original purchase price—will be inducted into the supply system to support the current E-6B fleet.

In January 2025, the Airborne Strategic Command, Control and Communications Programme Office (PMA-271) reached an agreement with the Adversary and Specialised Aircraft Programme Office (PMA-226) to provide flight hours on a Boeing 737 Next Generation (NG) aircraft.

US SCW 1 aircrew training 320E-6B Mercury pilots from Strategic Communications Wing ONE (SCW-1) and subordinate commands have successfully completed their first Public Aircraft Operations (PAO) training flight. This milestone, achieved on 30 May 2025, marks a significant step in sustaining readiness for the critical Take Charge and Move Out (TACAMO) mission. The flight followed a rapid collaboration and contract award to meet an urgent operational requirement.

The Boeing 737, N330FL (msn 33471/1192), used for training is leased from Florida-based 7Air Cargo, a company owned by Xtreme Aviation Holding. The
