PACAF Super Squadron tests conclude
At the end of April 2026, the commander of US Pacific Air Forces (PACAF), directed the reset of the Seventh Air Force (7th AF) F-16 fleet back to a three-squadron structure across South Korea situated Osan and Kunsan Air Bases. On 11 August 2025, Scramble Magazine first wrote about USAF's Mustang and Wolf Pack units lead the way for a Super Squadron.
The tests, deriving from the PACAF 2030 strategy, aimed to optimise combat capability by maximising personnel and aircraft efficiency within a single squadron, rather than spreading them across multiple, smaller units.
The Super Squadron tests provided valuable data and critical insights for F-16 operations across the USAF. The Airmen involved in this effort demonstrated a culture of adaptability, innovation, and complemented the Agile Combat Employment (ACE) model by enhancing flexibility within the PACAF.
The reset back to a three-squadron structure will leverage the strategic advantages of both Osan and Kunsan and will provide greater flexibility for the future PACAF posture. The tests were successfully completed and the transition from Osan back to Kunsan will be implemented in deliberate phases.
While at Osan the 36th Fighter Squadron 'Flying Fiends' is based, after the dispersed F-16s have returned to Kunsan, the 35th Fighter Squadron 'Pantons' and 80th Fighter Squadron 'Juvats' remain in situation.
