France GlobalEye credit Saab 640France announces intent to procure Saab GlobalEye

France has announced its intention to replace its ageing fleet of Boeing E-3F AWACS aircraft with Saab’s advanced GlobalEye airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) system. The announcement was made on 18 June 2025 during the Paris Air Show, where a joint declaration of intent was signed between Saab and France’s defence procurement agency, the Direction générale de l’armement (DGA).

The agreement outlines an initial procurement of two GlobalEye aircraft, with an option for two additional units. The package includes aircraft, ground equipment, training, and support services. While the declaration sets the stage for future cooperation, no formal contract has been signed, and Saab has yet to receive an order from France. A final notification process is now underway, with a contract expected to be finalized in the coming months.

This procurement marks a major step in modernising France’s airborne surveillance capabilities. The E-3F fleet, acquired in the late 1980s and early 1990s, has served for over three decades. France initially ordered three E-3s in February 1987, with the first delivered in May 1991 and final delivery in February 1992.

On the same day, Saab also signed a long-term framework agreement with French maintenance and modification provider Sabena technics. This partnership covers complex aircraft modification work and associated services for the GlobalEye programme. While the timing suggests alignment with the French announcement, neither party explicitly linked the two agreements. Saab stated that the partnership reflects its commitment to strengthening collaboration with French industry and expanding its modification capacity to meet growing demand for GlobalEye.
