First German Navy P-8 delivered
After officially accepting the first of eight ordered Boeing P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft on 1 October 2025, the German Navy received its first aircraft on home soil on 7 November 2025.
The aircraft, serial 63+01 (c/n 67448/9615), departed Seattle (WA) on 6 November 2025, making an overnight stop at Keflavik, Iceland. On 7 November, it continued its journey to Germany, where it arrived at Berlin-Schönefeld for a small ceremony. Later that afternoon, it completed the final leg to its new home base, arriving at 15:35 hrs local time.
Two additional Poseidons, 63+02 (c/n 67449/9616) and 63+03 (c/n 67828/9617), are in the final stages of production, with at least one already having completed its first flight. The German Navy initially ordered five Poseidons in 2021, followed by a second order for three more in 2023. Reportedly, there are plans to acquire an additional four aircraft, though this has not yet been confirmed.
The primary missions of the P-8A will be maritime surveillance and anti-submarine warfare. German personnel are currently training with the U.S. Navy in Jacksonville (FL) to prepare for operations with the new aircraft. Each class undergoes six months of instruction before returning to Germany for further training and integration into German Navy and NATO procedures. By mid-2026, the final groups are expected to complete their training in the United States.
The arrival of the P-8A marked the final phase of service for the last two Lockheed P-3C Orions. P-3C 60+04 was delivered to Portugal on 15 October 2025, while 60+03 was seriously damaged at Bermuda. This one is also intended to be transferred to Portugal, but we have to wait and see when this will finalised.
