Colombia Gripen deal finalized
After months of negotiations between the Colombian government and SAAB, the contract for the purchase of JAS39E/F Gripen fighter aircraft for the Fuerza Aérea Colombiana (FAC, Colombian Air Force) was signed on 14 November 2025.
Seventeen Gripens, 15 JAS39E and 2 JAS39F, will replace the FAC’s fleet of IAI Kfir jets, the first of which were obtained in 1989. The serviceability of the Kfir fleet has declined considerably; their technical lives have expired quickly, and operating costs have soared in recent years.
The still-capable Kfirs, which have been heavily upgraded over time, must soldier on for two or three more years as deliveries of the first Gripens are expected in 2027, and will last until 2032.
The acquisition of the Gripen represents a major step forward for Colombia. The Gripen is equipped with an AESA radar, IRST and state-of-the-art electronic warfare architecture and compatibility with advance weaponry and the ability to operate from short runways gives it a tactical advantage.
A key factor in securing the deal was the Swedish offset package, which includes technological cooperation across multiple projects not directly related to the military. The fact that neighbouring Brazil also operates the Gripen offers further chances for regional military cooperation.
The entire deal is valued at USD 4,25 billion and is the most expensive military procurement in Colombia’s recent history.
