Exercise Cobra WarriorAMI Typhoon crash at Trapani

On 13 December, an Aeronautica Militare (AM, Italian Air Force) Eurofighter F-2000A Typhoon, operated by 37° Stormo Cesare Toschi/18° Gruppo, crashed into the sea off Locogrande, north of Marsala, Trapani.

At the time of the accident the Eurofighter was five miles southeast from landing at Trapani-Birgi.

An HH-139 of 15° Stormo Stefano Cagna/82° Centro CSAR (Combat Search and Rescue) was dispatched to coordinate the rescue attempt, in addition to the police, ambulance and firefighters. Unfortunately the pilot did not survive the accident.

Trapani is also a civil airport and multiple flights had to divert to Palermo.

F-2000A MM7307/37-01 (c/n IS039) was aircraft that crashed. It departed Istana (TV) together with F-2000A MM7354/37-54 in the late afternoon for a (return) training flight to Trapani.
