Texel Airshow 2012

28 July 2012

Static:
The LeaseWeb Texel Airshow 2012 took place at Texel International Airport 28 July. The previous edition took place in 2007 and this year’s edition was the tenth time. As the only
large airshow this year in the Netherlands, due to budget cuts the Royal Netherlands Air Force will now only biannually organize their Open Days, it was much anticipated.

Contrary to the forecast again Texel Island proved to be the most sunny part of Holland. Although Vliegveld Texel only has grass runways, the organizing team led by Ed and Mike de
Bruijn, once again, managed to put an interesting and relatively large program together. Unfortunately the show was plagued by some cancelations of anticipated participants,
(RAF Sea King and Merlin, German Orion, Team RedHawks, the T-28 and the Dutch Spitfire). The lack of substantial Dutch military participation in the single air show of this year (no
KLu Apache, AB412, Cougar, Alouette, Hercules, KDC-10 to name a few) must be a sign of times unfortunately. The orientation of the airfield (runway 05-23) has the sun position for
the flying display at a disadvantage for the ‘flying only’ aircraft. That said, more than 22.000 people thoroughly enjoyed the show in sunny weather on Saturday.

The name sake of the LeaseWeb Texel Airshow indicates a generous sponsor, amongst others, was found to help make the event possible. Traditionally the air show at Texel is also
build around the possibility to arrive by (general aviation) aircraft in what is known as a Fly-In. You might as well call the Texel Airshow the Oshkosh small scale Dutch equivalent.
This report includes a complete summary of all 275 different aircraft consisting of the visitors, arrivals (242!), overnighters,
Texel Airshow.

These aircraft participated in the airshow from their home bases and made multiple passes. The Fouga, the Hunter and Stitch performed their solo display.
The Breitling Jet Team flew their L-39C Albatros from and to De Kooy with ES-TLF/6, ES-TLG/4, ES-YLI/3, ES-YLP/7, ES-YLS/2, ES-YLR/0, ES-YLX/1.

The following is an abbreviated but full alphabetical overview of all aircraft arriving in the days before the show and in the morning of Saturday 28 July.
Some of the arrivals, including all the military, participated in the static show.

The smaller airplanes formed large lines of parked planes. Arriving aircraft on Saturday and Friday afternoon recieved follow me instructions from a handful of motorcycles. The
lines of parked aircraft were not accessible for the general public during the show however.

The Cessna’s and Pipers in the overview are abbreviated normally as Ce and PA respectively. Some other less known small civil aircraft, which we normally won’t cover in Scramble
anyway, are designated more fully. An even more detailed overview of all airplanes that visited the airshow can be found at www.texelairport.nl. Underlined registrations participated
in the static show.

Many owners, pilots, family members and passengers of the aircraft arriving on Friday 27 July and the days before traditionally elected to camp overnight in tents near and sometimes
literally under the wing of their aircraft. The bulk of the visitors for the show arrived via an elaborate slot system Saturday morning starting sharply at eight AM. After the
show Saturday almost 200 aircraft departed the island, again using slot times, in just a few hour’s time, quite a sight!

As a last note, hopefully we won’t have to wait five years again for the next edition of the Texel Airshow!
