After disembarking from the ship in Helsinki harbour we immediately drove to the preserved MiG-21 in Helsinki town. It is on the roof of the building but not visible from the street. Anyway, just take the lift to the viewing platform and you can get close by.

to see the Safir when the Museum is closed (or if you like to save the money...) just continue to the right when you stand in front of the entrance. But bear in mind that you have to be quite tall to see into the window (I took my little son on my shoulders and he took a picture of it)

Pori Airport (EFPO) 04/08/2020
first I went to the tech school. A friendly guy showed me the aircraft in the hangar and explained me their story. F.27 FF-2 was outside, the rest inside.

Museum:
I did not visit the Museum itself as I have been there in 2004. But some of the aircraft parked outside were new for me, so I paid a visit:

After that I tried to see some active aircraft, but the aerodrome was closed with huge construction works on the runway.

Before travelling further I drove past the preserved Draken at the Air Force Academy:

Kuopio (EFKU) 06+07/08/2020
a row of 12 Hawks was parked on the old runway in the military area, next to the parking of the civil terminal. This could be a good part of the active Hawks within the Finnish AF. It seems they have been flown over from Jyväskylä where the airfield was closed (see before)

I spent the whole morning at Rovaniemi airport. Spotting is easy and comfortable from the carpark to the left of the terminal. The flightline is also visible on the far side from here, so you can see what to expect that day.

Oulo (EFOU) 12/08/2020
I was quite surprised when I met 10 of the 12 Hawks i previously saw at Kuopio again here at Oulo. Obviously they are now based at Oulo for the duration of the runway closure at their homebase, since they were flying local missions on 12 and 13/08. Anyway the small military area at Oulo is quite overcrowded with 10 aircraft.

Vesivehmaa 15/08/2020
the guy at Pori told me that here was a flying display at Vesivemaa today which can be viewed from the car. As me and the family didn`t want to spend several hours in the car watching aerobatics by some planes I decided to call in in the early evening, hoping to see some of the aircraft still present.
This turned not true as every of the proposed aircraft (Hawk, Vinka, NH.90 + some warbirds) did not land or have already left again.
But a friendly guy opened the museum for me so the visit was not totally fruitless.

Utti is not the best place for spotting. From the civil area you have quite a good overview but I struggled with the heathaze and backlight in the morning. There were two NH.90 outside on the ramp. One was flying and could e identified, the other one not. Furthermore, they tend not to come in in runway direction which makes it more difficult to choose the right spot to stay.

loads of single engine planes present here. I was last here in 2004. I remember it was no problem to get an airside access to the big old hangar between the terminal and the Coast guard area. To my surprise by peering into a back window of this hangar I found it completely empty. Probably they have an safety issue with the building.
The coast Guard hangar was closed and no aircraft was visible.

the visit at the airfield was rather disappointing. The whole area was a big construction zone, it was impossible to get to the museum or to the ramps from the terminal side. So the score was limited for the Tu-22 und Tu-134 parked on the opposite side of the runway and the preserved Il-38 in town. I decided to come here once again for the museum and the rest.

I was there as early as 07.45AM because I learned, that the two RC-12X on TDY here should depart every day at about 8AM. Rather frustrating to see ironically today they departed out of Riga (the airport that I left yesterday evening in a hurry) and only passed overhead at FL170...
But the visit was not bad at all, from the area of logistic company you have a good view on the ramp of the Lithuanian Air Force.

one of the more interesting GA fields to visit. The Soviet AF An-2 in original colours in the main hangar are very interesting, the many Wilgas around making the score complete.
Obviosly the AN-2 did not take up their civil registration, since they are not readable on the aircraft (but the old soviet code and the following Lithuanian code do)

Cool report, very much "off the beaten tracks". Thanks for posting, especially also the pics :respect:

Alex,
Thanks for the interesting report. Regarding your sighting at Tallinn:

"3 white" L-39 (Estonian AF?)
an all blue L-39 without visible civil registration but a big white "serial" 3 and a huge estonian roundel on the tail was parked near the border guard hangar. I do not really know but this looks like another new L-39 for the Estonian Air Force

This will have been ES-TLN of the Region display team

Thanks for the very detailed report. Quite a few updates within that list.
A few comments:

150S001 35 white MiG-21SM Sov. AF preserved
That should be c/n 150SO01 (Sierra Oscar), not S0 (Sierra zero)

OH-ABC Pa-23-250 preserved at entrance road
That one is dressed up with a fake registration. It used to be registered as OH-PPS.

the northernmost preserved aircraft in Finland can be found at Kittilä airport where a Draken is mounted on a pole:
DK-203 Saab 35BS Finn. AF preserved
Any sign of the PA-28 in town? It should be along the main road in front of the hotel. Though a little south, so the Draken is still the most northern aircraft in Finland :)

38 blue Il-38 Sov. AF preserved
That is an Il-28.

thanks a lot for your comments Erwin.
Concerning the Pa-28 in Kittilä: I realized too late that there is another aircraft preserved there. But I drove exactly that street (even two times) and did not see a Piper in fact. But I cannot say for sure that its really gone - I might well just have missed it somehow.

Regards
Alex

By the way: thanks for your great website: it helps me a lot planning my trips! Keep up the good work!

Then the Piper must be gone. It was painted red and right next to the road, you can't have missed it. It is still visible on Street View, but not on Google Earth.
And I am glad the website can be of help on such a trip, that's what we all do it for!
