US trip, day 7, last day, a cloudy Rainbow Canyon (pics)

Post by stipjes »

Hello,

Last week I left Holland for Sunshine and Planes in the US. There was no real purpose like a Red Flag or so but travelling through Nevada and Arizona always is worth the trip and I had no plan. I arrived at LAX on Friday evening the 3rd and drove to see what was happening in Yuma. I arrived at Sunrise. East Coast AV-8's started up before the sun was up.

4 I have no idea to what Army unit the Beech belongs... Somewhere from Nevada the batch says.

8 Next stop was Tucson. Friend Hans had already let me know that the ANG would be flying in the weekend. When I arrived at around noon there was a lot of action. About 20 different Bunzings flew.

12 Two EO-5B's where present again. The hangar which they use have doors now btw.

Thanks, here is the first part of the rest. In the morning we first visited the AMARG drop area to read off the new C-130H's that arrived and the remaining OH-58D's in this area. Already about 30+ where scrapped....
While Hans read serials I left for the IAP again since F-16's where flying, this time the light was a bit better:

21 Finally I saw the local Metro fly!

23 The ANG weekend also worked for Davis Monthan, when I left the IAP for AMARG and Hans again a few A-10's landed.

30 A year ago I saw this T-34 operational at Corpus Cristie airhow and now its future looks very uncertain being on the wrong site of AMARG :-( and without protection.

36 If you end up in this area (area 20) your future looks much more bright. You are in store for a museum :-).

37 In the back you see the company that took care of the 30+ OH-58D's....

39 The main storage area saw some new arrivals too (for me).

41 Pima also received a new a/c.

West Coast US trip, day 3 (dec 5th) Nellis B-52's (pics)

Ok, next is last Monday. I left Tucson before Sunrise to arrive at Phoenix Sky-Harbour 2 hours later. A day before 10 T-38's where parked at the ramp but unfortunately they where gone. Luckely a converted Navy C-131 was parked at the ramp.... (better then nothing). Next was Luke AFB. I wanted to spent the day here but when I arrived it was very peacefull.... Nightflying I guess. After 5 minutes I was sure nothing would happen until two oç'lock here and I wanted to leave (it seems they start the day then if night flying is practised). I had no plan and I just received a message that Hornets were present at El Centro... Scrabble.nl mentioned something going on at Nellis so I decided to go to Vegas.
42 On the way I passed Kingman, an USAF Special Operations Command An.2 was present:
Image
43 When I arrived a strange variety of aircraft where seen. There was a lot of activity. Strange to be here with no Red Flag:

48 Three B-2's arrived just before sunset and I could not find them the day after... I guess they left again at night.

49 The advantage of winter :-)
Image
50 On the platforms B-1's and B-52's were present. This is more often the case but one of each had an OT code :-). Just after sunset the OT B-52 took off amongst other a/c. It was tricky light but I managed to get some shots :-). (could not find noise reduction in PS4 :-()

53 After take off more a/c landed:

It turned out to be a nice day after all.

Looks like you caught the Integration phase at Nellis, which is the work up to Advanced Integration, which is the Weapons School end of course graduation exercise. It happens every June and December, and always gets a mix of interesting stuff.

B-2s seem to arrive around sunset, fly a mission, then go home.

Thanks!
Here is day 2 at Nellis (exactly 1 week ago :-)).
No B-2's where seen so like mentioned earlier by they must have left. This day only the B-1's where flying (twice). Luckely the OT one did fly.
Sun was low again and it was pitchblack at 17.00. The day was very short....
