Light on the horizon

Post by Key »

Although it will roughly mean some 100 extra hours of work for a certain Admin (not me), the Scramble board has decided on a technical move of this Message Board to a different server, despite the disadvantages this has for us. I will not bother you with more detail on that, but we hope to see the end of the current unacceptable performance problems :blpc: within several weeks.

All,

We were aiming to do the migration to the new server this coming weekend, as we have now an (almost) fully working test environment on the new server.
As those following us on Twitter already knew, the only thing what does not work, is the mail functionality; the notifications you receive for new private messages or replies to topics you are subscribed to , but also the confirmation mail when new members sign-up, password reminders and such.
This mail issue is something the provider has to solve, there is nothing we can do about it ourselves.

But as we feel this is a key functionality, we consider this to be a show-stopper to make the migration before this has been solved. So unfortunately we have to bare a little longer on the current server.

As a side note; as soon as the mail functionality is restored, we need some additional testers. If you're interested, please drop me a private message.

Regards,

Hans

All this hard work to come still? Just as I wanted to post that over the last few days I have had 0% hickups with the board and wanted to say "job well done"... ;-)

Huh? The migration job hasn't been executed. but - like Richard - I'm also experiencing a Scramble site without any hickups or need for refreshes for a couple of days already. It's just working now - flawlessly! So something must have changed, and luckily to the good . . .
Enjoy!

Hi,

We have concluded most tests on the new server successfully. So at one point we were already planning to make the definitive switch today.
The only (main) thing which causes concern, and which partially does not work, is the mail functionality; the notifications you receive when you are subscribed to a topic or a forum, when you forgot your password, the confirmation-mail when you sign-up to become a member etc.

But those concerns are of such a (potential) impact, we have defined them as being a show-stopper for the time being. We are already discussing those issues with our provider, but unfortunately they didn't provide us yet with satisfying answers or solutions.
Depending on how fast they react, and their answers, we will schedule a new date as soon as possible (or find another hosting-provider...).
But as this was the last (early) Sunday-morning for some time to come I have the opportunity to do this migration, a new date will inevitably mean this needs to be done at a 'busier' hour.

Hans

Just to get the idea .. this new server is dedicated .. or still shared? Coz why mail problems if it's dedicated?

Good luck, if you need somebody to test things ... I am more than welcome to do so.

Cheers,

Unfortunately not.
The new provider had told us they would solve the last outstanding issues last week. But for some, to us still unknown, reason this never materialised. We are currently still waiting for a response to our enquiries - with last resort we have to start looking for another provider all over again.

Bad news... maybe.

Apparently our 'new' provider isn't able to live up to expected services; we are already several weeks waiting for an answer to a simple question: "when are you going to ...". (not "we want you to do this before XXX")

As we lost all confidence in this hosting provider by now, tonight we made the tough decision to cancel our contract with them, and start looking for another one. (Anybody knows a good provider with a dedicated server -or VPS- for a decent price? Bottleneck for most providers is our dataflow; we want one which can offer at least 500, but preferably 1000 GB/month, as we have some nice plans with scramble.nl for the near future :-) ).

The good part of this is that, unlike with the current situation/provider, in a couple of days, we hopefully can make a a decent planning to move at least this message board to the new server, which was already scheduled week and a half ago when this provider had kept their promise.

We will keep you updated as soon as we have more news.

Hans

I guess a big disappointment but I think a very wise decision. Better now than half way...

And what do you call a "decent price"? :-)

Thanks for your update.

Who is this General Error anyway, and why does he keep messing up the board?

Seriously, I have the idea it's getting worse the last couple of weeks, after being somewhat stable up until about a month ago. Any news on possible changes to be implemented soon?

Thanks, and keep up the good work!
Herbert
