Here are some pictures from the aviation museum at Riga airport, which I visited at 11 July 2008. I have more pictures, so shout if you would like to see them

An-2, as can be seen, not all planes are in immaculate condition

Four L-29s are preserved in a row.

One of the rarer Mil helicopters, an Mi-1, formerly with DOSAAF

The whistling giant, an Mi-6. I asked my girlfriend to sit in front to show how big the beast really is!

A nice Mi-24 Hind-A. Never seen one before

Big gun on a MiG-15U

Can anyone tell me why a MiG-23 has three 'MiG-kill' markings? Must be for something else.... I hope.

Another type you don't see too often, a MiG-25RBS

Su-7BKL together with a L-13

And the biggest surprise to me, a Yak-28 Brewer. One of my favourite Russian types!

It's good to see they actually took action since the nineties and put a lot of aircraft from storage up on display. Thx for the pics!

Yes indeed, although they still have a lot to do. But it is clear they are working on many of the exhibits (look at the MiG-29 below).

Su-7U, too bad of the covers on the cockpit. Why in a museum I wonder?

Second MiG-15U

One of the five MiG-21s in the museum. This is a MiG-21SMT

An-24 with Soviet and Latvian registration. In the back you can see the Tu-154 and Tu-22M. Unfortunately, both are in storage outside the museum grounds and are not good for pictures....

This one gives a bit of an idea how the planes are parked, with a lot of other stuff in between....

MiG-27 that could use a bit of paint.

And half of a MiG-29. I am sure the rest of the parts are somewhere as well, hopefully they get it back together.

It seems, the museum is close to the active runway: is it easy to photograp 'normal' traffic from there

You can see the taxiway and runway easily from the museum and behind the L29s you can probably take some shots as well. I haven't tried that though.

It looks very interesting. I am planning a trip to Riga in the near future so I might check it out.

Do you have an address for the museum?
Is it possible to walk from the terminals to the museum?

The website of the museum is this: http://aviamuseum.org/EN/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
And you can easily walk from the terminal to the museum. It is only about 200m (exit the terminal and walk to the left).
