Short versions are capable of LAPES (= Low Altitude Parachute Extraction System) delivery of cargo. Something the stretched -30's is not capable of doing, due to the (bigger) shift of the center of gravity during the extraction. Heb zeer goede ervaringen gehad met een Sigma EX 100-300mm f/4.0 HSM. Zeer solide bouw, maar niet bepaald lichtgewicht of compact. Geen IS, maar wel f/4.0 over het hele bereik ( There is no substitude for speed !) In de tijd dat ik hem had (1 1/2 jaar) is m'n Canon EF 70-200mm f/4.0 L USM bijna niet...

Be sure to check out the sharpness of this lens at 400mm before you buy it. The third example I've used is very sharp, but the first two where very soft above the 300mm. On the other hand, there are also very good reports about this lens. Especially the newer ones. It seems like Canon improved its q...
