Kathmandu, Nepal (VNKT/KTM) 2019 CIV

Post by redcan »

Hiya,

Never visited this country before and had a couple of days to spare so, I decided to give it a try. Flew in from BKK on Thai Airways and after an uneventful flight immigration proved to be really an adventure. Lets just say I'm still wondering how I made it into the country.... After collecting a local SIM and cash (to try this is also not for the faint of heart) I managed to find my way to the Meridian Hotel which is across the road from the terminal. Just follow your guts, kick away some stray dogs, evade some cars and motorbikes and you are there. You don't need to have a room in the hotel, the bar is open to anyone (hotel is expensive by the way for Nepalese standards; I stayed in the city). All planes below were logged from the rooftop bar, except for the ones on the last day which I made from the terminal waiting for my delayed flight back to BKK. Very friendly staff at the bar and nobody cared about me using bins and making notes. You are more of a curiosity, the staff coming over all the time to refill your glass and to practise their English.

Anyway, I only logged what I needed so there are some more flights into the airport but, not that many more (think about a BG 738, a KE 772, an AI 320 and thats about it basically...). Times are a rough guess because I just noticed I didn't wrote them down so, sorry for that. Planes without a prefix in front of them are Nepalese but, I guess that's obvious.

I didn't need it so I didn't bother to walk over but the Turkish Airlines A330 which skid off the runway a couple of years ago is now at the other side of the fence and a local pilot turned it into a museum. It was repainted and as far as I could see during landing and take-off it was a job well done.

A note, if you take a look into your SWAF or AFQR or whatever book you are using, you will notice that quite a couple of airlines don't even show up at KTM. Far as I know they are based somewhere else in the country and are only making scenic flights into the Himalayas. For example Makalu Air, Sita Air and Summit Air. Also, a lot of smaller planes from airlines like Tara, Yeti and Nepal Airlines don't show up at KTM
