That is what "leaders" do when their internal opposition grows, look for an external enemy.

There are parallels with what the Argentines did with the Malvinas/Falklands. But in this case I can't see our "Jan Petertje" sending a couple of squadrons of our F-16's and a marines bataljon over therr to protect the islands.

That is why we have a vessel at the Antilles all the time, not having to send one after H. got active

Do you not believe, that the USA is a "enemy" of Venezuela, under the current circumstances?

Certainly. But Obama will be much more moderate than Bush was. The US is not happy with Chaves but it it very unlikely they will actually make a military move into Venezuela. They have much more to gain with the region being quiet as they already have more than enough trouble elsewhere (Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran, Korea). But Chavez wants to stir up things in order to become more popular in his own country and possible gain some extra powers. An (even if only perceived) external enemy is always a good motivation for new strict laws and more powers to the leaders.

I agree with you.

But as you say, all the Venezuelan movements are only theoretical, or does really someone believe that he will invade your islands ...?

On the other side, the USA are also pushing a little the whole story. The US-Flights are of course not only due to the drug-problematics in Columbia.

See the matter different: What would the people in the Netherlands say and think, if for example Terschelling was Venezuelan, and they alloved to Russia to perform flight from there with reconainsance planes? (Is there any airport at Terschelling? )

Having just announced a devaluation of the Bolivar, the increasingly communist Hugo Chavez needs some diversion to take the population's attention off the internal economy, which despite high oil revenues is not in the best of shape.

Expect more sabre rattling form this country in the future.

there was not even an Orion deployed at Hato at the time the so-called intrusion should have taken place... if it were true, and the aircraft had been intercepted they would have had pictures to show the world and fully exploit it.

an intrusion occurred in May 2008 by a USN Viking though, the comms between the TWR and the pilot had just been played on Venezuelan national radio last week, one day before the Orion incident was announced.... what a coincidence.

this guy is just playing politics and he is quite good at it. the FOL contract has to be extended this year and elections will be held in Curacao within two weeks, so he knows what is at stake.

Venezuela supplies about 1.5 million barrels of crude oil and refined petroleum products to the U.S. market every day, according to the EIA (Energy Information Administration, section of the U.S. Department of Energy). Venezuelan oil comprises about 11 percent of U.S. crude oil imports, which amounts to 60 percent of Venezuela’s total exports.

Source: http://www.cfr.org/publication/12089/ve ... my.html#p7

Also interesting: the Venezuelan state-owned oil company PDSVA has five wholly-owned refineries in the U.S. and they showed interest in a refinery at Aruba last Friday...

So my bet is that these barking dogs won't bite each other (at least not in the next few years).

And the Venezuelans have got a sense of humour, or are incredibly stupid, as last week their ministry of information and communication accused the USA of triggering the devastating earthquake in Haiti with their new "earthquake-triggering" weapon.... :shocked!:

So I guess the USA will use this highly succesfull weapon against Iran soon.... :D

regards,

Michel

As if the US should have such a thing, they wouldn't use it against Chavez, Castro or OBL before heading for Haïti.

:!lol!: HOAX!!! :blabla:

Sorry, but this story about Venezuela and Russia blaming an earthquake machine has proved to be another (admitted: brilliant) hoax. There are no verified recordings of either the Venezuelan information minister or the Russian navy making a statement of sorts. It's nice to see though how the Dutch Televaag newspaper amongst others have fallen for this cheap kind of journalism of copy-pasting anything found on the web. Must have been some Twitter account...

Chavez is an idiot and a danger to peace in Latin America, but him and his cronies are not exactly that stupid...

And the Iran thing. Iran suffered a 5+ earthquake last week.. Not suggesting anything. But, coincidence? I think not!

And exactly where was he quoted?? That this 'local?' US TV channel was fooled as well doesn’t make it true

Although he does blame the US of taking advantage of the situation.

If there is any coincidence it is surely not humanly invoked, but rather naturally related (seismic activity on a global scale) But I am no geologist so I have no clue whatsoever to make any funded statement regarding this.

But the US behind all this? What's there to gain for them by demolishing one of the poorest countries in the world?
