And there we go again with the black and white. Yes, I want them to stick to some rules, but if a foreigner walks through a red traffic light here I couldn't give a damn. So which is it then? Black or white?

That reminds me very much of all the people here who called for staying away from Schiphol during the nuclear security summit because 'spotting was impossible' then.... yeah right.

I do agree however that sometimes the risks involved are great, sometimes too great to take. And Fujairah maybe like that to some, probably not to others. It depends on how you do it and I am just saying that I am not going to declare in absolute terms that I will never go there, just because somebody else ran into bad luck. That's all. If you want to, feel free. Just please, don't decide for me that I should follow your ideas as well.

Erwin

First of all, take a deeeep breath, relax and calm down. I never tried to make a decison for you nor request you to follow any ideas, so I can absolutely not understand why you feel personally offended! I responded to the general situation and I am pretty sure a lot of people are thankful for that. If you understand a pretty clear general statement as personal criticism, feel free to do that.
I already regret that I started to comment this thread as my intention was just to share my experience will the majority instead of ending up in a useless discussion with a single individual. You will do what you want and I really hope you will always have a great time and be lucky!

To finalize this from my side, I am really sorry, but your comparism is a bit weak as I am sure, and I really hope, that crossing a red traffic light in your beautiful country will never be considered a national security issue ;-)

Then it must be me who misinterpreted these quotes as you trying to tell everyone what to do and don't do. If I did, my mistake.

NEVER FORGET THAT THEY CONSIDER EVERYTHING IN AVIATION AND ESPECIALLY IN REGARDS TO MILITARY AVIATION AS NON-PUBLIC!!!

In any case, I do appreciate people sharing experiences, thoughts and certainly also warnings. That helps a lot in making up your mind and especially taking the right precautions.

And the comparison is not at all weak, as I do not compare crossing through red with spotting. I compare judging the rules by yourself and deciding whether you want to abide by the rule or not. Once you decide you don't abide by a certain rule you have to deal with the consequences. And not following the 'no spotting' rule has given me no problems so far, but walking through a red light in Amsterdam once almost cost me my life.... so which is worse now?

just recently I replied the following to an english spotter who intented to go to Abu Dhabi.

Neil, one advice. Be aware. Dont do anything illegal. Some dutch photographers were put in jail for some months in the UAE some years ago. I won't risk my freedom. Think you better can go there when an open day or airshow is organized.

Anyway, if you do to go I hope to see your findings and/or photos on this list or privately.

Hope you have a good time there!!!!

Peter

Subject: [MSF] Req: Spotting Abu Dhabi/Dubai/Sharjah

Evening all.

Heading to Abu Dhabi late Nov for the Grand Prix and thinking of going a couple of days early before the wife arrives. Looking on the net spotting/photography doesnt seem to be totally frowned upon. Does anybody have any recent experience of spotting in these locations that they care to share.

Regards

Peter

A court hearing for British plane spotters held over allegations of suspicious behaviour in the United Arab Emirates has been postponed for a week.
