Bad times for the Romanian Air Force as today an IAR-99 Soim crashed near Bacau. The 2 pilots ejected safely.
A military aircraft IAR 99 Soim, belonging to the Bacau Garrison has crashed in Nicolae Balcescu commune in Bacau county on Monday.

Two pilots were on board, but they managed to save themselves, to catapult and their condition was good. Rescue teams started the operation to recover the crew. According to the mayor of Letea Veche, the wreck would have fallen down in the storage lake Galbeni – Letea Veche.

Defence minister Mihai Fifor and the Chief of Staff Nicolae Ciuca, are already on the way to the scene of the crash.

According to procedures, a committee of the Air Forces’ General Staff will investigate the causes of the incident.

The IAR 99 Soim flights have been halted on the ground until the investigations on the crash is concluded, while the Military Prosecutor’s Office has been notified in this case.

41-year-old Commander Marcel Bresug, the chief of staff of Air Base 95 and 40yo commander captain Iulian Pena, chief flight instructor within the same military unit, were piloting the aircraft that had taken off for a technical verification flight around 13:20hrs. After about ten minutes, the pilots have catapulted themselves, and the aircraft crashed in the above-mentioned area. The pilots have been recovered by the rescue teams and are currently on stable conditions.

Commander Bresug had over 1,000 flights under his belt on a IAR 99Soim aircraft, while captain commander Pena, had almost 450 flights under this belt.
