Maastricht bans 747-200 and MD-11
November 23, 2022 | 153 Views

MAASTRICHT - Maastricht Aachen Airport has come up with a proposal
to no longer allow aircraft of the Boeing 747-200 and McDonnell Douglas MD-11 types
at the Limburg airport from 1 April 2023.
The airport also wants to charge a surcharge of 100% for Boeing 747-400 aircraft as of the new airport decree.

Stimulating fleet renewal is part of the States proposal that the Provincial Executive of Limburg has sent to the Provincial Council.

The airport is aiming for an accelerated phase-out of both aircraft types,
which, also according to the local residents consulted, cause the most nuisance.

In order to collect the picture from local residents,
representatives of the airport spoke to local residents in early September 2022 and invited them to complete a survey.

These data were analyzed and compared with a report from KICL, the reporting center for flight nuisance in Limburg.

Findings

The results of the round table discussions, interviews and survey showed that cargo planes generally cause the most noise nuisance among the respondents.

Specifically, this concerns the Boeing 747 series (-200 / -400 / -800), supplemented by the Boeing 777.

It emerged from the discussions that the 747-800 mainly causes a lot of noise and vibration nuisance,
and the 747- 200 and 747-400 mainly cause nuisance noise during take-off.

Cargo aircraft in general cause nuisance due to noise, low flying and the creation of vortex winds.

Measures
Based on these findings, the management of Maastricht Aachen Airport has drawn up the following proposal to accelerate the phase-out of the aircraft types that cause the most nuisance:

As of April 1, 2023, flights with a Boeing 747-200 and MD11 are no longer permitted at Maastricht Aachen Airport.

The airport takes into account an implementation of 90 days from the decision of the Provincial Council in December.

With effect from the new Airport Decree,
the airport discourages the arrival of aircraft type Boeing 747-400 by charging them with a rate increase of at least 100%.

As of 2030, the Boeing 747-400 is no longer allowed at Maastricht Aachen Airport.

Existing measures

These measures replace the disincentive measures already introduced from previous years.

From April 2019, a surcharge of approximately 35% will apply to aircraft in the noisiest categories,
and in 2021 a surcharge will be added per take-off and landing for,
among others, the Boeing 747-200 (bottom of Chapter 3 aircraft).

Since the introduction of the surcharge in 2019, the number of flight movements with these aircraft types has almost halved compared to 2018.
